McGill soccer stars Chloe Renaud and Mara Bouchard earn All-Canadian honours

HALIFAX – Chloe Renaud and Mara Bouchard, two members of the McGill University Martlets, were among the honourees announced at the All-Canadian Banquet to kick off the U SPORTS women's soccer Final Eight national championship tournament on Wednesday.

Among the major award winners were Cape Breton forward Alliya Rowe (player of the year), Montreal Carabins defender Blessing Mayi-Kith (rookie of the year), Saskatchewan's Anna Oliver (Student-athlete Community Service Award) and UBC bench boss Jesse Symons (coach of the year).

Renaud merited first team honours, while Bouchard earned a berth on the second team, upping the McGill women's soccer program to 58 All-Canadians since the sport was sanctioned with a national championship in 1987.

Renaud was voted women's soccer player of the year in the RSEQ conference. A 5-foot-5 midfielder from St. Hubert, Que., she is a three-time league all-star who tallied 12 goals and added four assists to capture the RSEQ conference scoring crown and tied for fifth in the nation among goal leaders. The 21-year-old psychology junior became the first member of the Martlets to score a dozen goals in 23 years. She scored against all seven of the other teams in the Quebec league and found the net in 10 of the team's 14 games. Credited with three winning goals, she was named three times as the team's player of the game, twice as the McGill athlete of the week and merited the RSEQ weekly honour once.

"The most impressive thing about Chloe's season was that she was able to score consistently, in almost every game and against each opponent in our league," says McGill head coach Jose-Luis Valdes. "We always count on her score at least once per game, which is very difficult to do in soccer. She always wants the ball, is looking to get the ball. She is often double or triple-teamed but still finds a way to come out with the ball at her feet and be in position to pass or get a good shot on net."

Bouchard, a 23-year-old psychology senior from Granby, Que., is a four-time conference all-star who has now earned All-Canadian honours in each of her last three seasons. The 5-foot-4 midfielder is a team captain who started in all 14 regular season games, had two assists and only one yellow card.

"Mara leads by example, has a very competitive drive and plays at a high consistent level every game," says Valdes. "She steals the ball without fouling and according to our advanced statistics, she had a 95 per cent tackle success rate this season (122 of 128) and only had 2.5 fouls per game called against her."

The 2024 U SPORTS championship gets underway Thursday at Wickwire Field on the campus of Dalhousie University and culminates Sunday with the national championship game at 3 p.m. Eastern (4 p.m. local time). All 11 games from the eight-team tournament will be webcast live on CBC digital platforms in English and Radio-Canada's digital platforms and ICTou.tv in French.
