VICTORIA, BC – McGill captured a bronze medal in men's heavyweight double sculls at the Canadian University Rowing Association championships at Elk Lake on Sunday. The two-day showcase featured 286 athletes from 21 universities across Canada.
Ayoub Sabri, a math and computer science junior from Rabat, in Morocco, sat in the stroke seat and
Patrice Légaré, a mechanical engineering junior from Montreal, was in the bow seat. They completed the two-kilometre race in six minutes, 47.58 seconds to finish third. The race was won by the Waterloo duo of
Leon Domagalski and
Ahmet Gulsaran who struck gold in 6:42.69. The Ottawa boat with
David Jefic and
Alexandre Disselkamp claimed silver in 6:45.05.
It marked the second consecutive season that a McGill boat reached the podium at CURA Nationals, following in the wake of last year's silver by
Jacob Lofaro and
Federico Sanchez, also in the men's double sculls, held in Burnaby, B.C. Prior to that, McGill's last medal was in 2014, when
Julian Pouliot won silver in the men's single, also held at Elk Lake.
One other McGill boat qualified for the men's A finals, with the lightweight double sculls placing sixth. In the B finals, the Redbirds finished first in the coxed heavy eight, first in the single sculls, fifth in the lightweight single sculls and third in the coxless pair.
McGill finished seventh in the men's division. UBC won its third consecutive men's banner, with five podium finishes in seven events, highlighted by gold medals in the single, pair, and coxed eight. Brock finished second in the points and had five medals, while Victoria was third in points and also collected five medals.
In the women's division, McGill finished 10th of 21 schools as Victoria captured its third-straight CURA title. Six of the seven Vikes boats finished on the podium, with a pair of gold medals and four silvers. Second place UBC medaled in five events, while third-place Queen's collected a pair of silvers and a bronze.
No McGill boats qualified for the women's A finals (i.e. top six) but three did reach the B finals, led by a first-place in double sculls (seventh overall). That boat featured
Emily Lindquist, a fifth-year psychology senior from San Clemente, Calif., in the stroke seat, with
Abigail Powell, a science junior from Warwick, in Bermuda, in the bow seat.
The Martlets coxed heavyweight eight was second in the B final (eighth overall) and the lightweight double was third (ninth overall).
Victoria's
Sai Sai Faubert was named the female athlete of the year for her double gold medal day. And for the second straight season, Brock's
Stephen Harris was selected as the male athlete of the year, after a lightweight single gold performance in addition to helping the Badgers garner bronze in the coxed eight.
Jane Gumley of Victoria and
Mike Pearce of UBC were named the women's and men's coaches of the year, respectively.
The CURA governs post-secondary rowing in Canada and promotes participation in rowing through academic and sporting excellence at Canadian Universities. Since 1997 the CURA has held the annual Canadian University Rowing Championship (CURC), hosted by one of the member institutions in early November. The CURC is an opportunity for men's and women's teams to compete for the title of National Champions, and a showcase of top Canadian under-23 and senior rowing talent—many of whom have represented or will go on to represent Canada internationally.
