Emma-Jane Scotten scored a career-high 23 points and led McGill to a 58-48 victory over Concordia in women's basketball at the John Dore Court, Thursday.
It was was the third consecutive league victory for the red-hot Martlets, who moved into first-place with a 4-2 record in the RSEQ conference, while Concordia dropped to 2-3.
The result was McGill's second straight win over the Stingers, the fourth in five meetings and improved the Martlets lifetime record to 88-92 in 180 head-to-head confrontations since the cross-town rivals first met in 1975.
McGill, which had a 38-32 edge in rebounding, led 16-12 after the first quarter, 37-25 at halftime, 47-39 after three and took the final stanza 11-9. The Stingers held the lead only once, midway through the opening quarter.
Scotten, a 5-foot-9 guard from Ottawa, equalled her previous best 23 points in a non-conference game against Laurentian on Oct. 16, 1922. It was the third time over her four seasons that she reached the 20-point plateau. She played a game-high 37 minutes and shot 7-for-14. Scotten was 4-for-9 from three-point range and drained five of seven attempts from the free-throw line. She added four steals, two rebounds and a pair of assists. A 22-year-old Arts senior, she is majoring in education in global contexts.

Lily Rose Chatila and
Katie Rathwell added eight and seven points respectively. Pacing the Stingers was Victoria Lawrence with 11.
The Martlets shot 37.5 per cent from the field (21/56), went 7-for-24 from the arc and nine of 17 from the line. Concordia shot a tepid 21.8 per cent (12/55), going 3-for-21 from long distance and 21-for-26 from the foul line.
The fourth-place Stingers (2-3) will close out their fall schedule with a game at Bishop's (3-1) on Nov. 30.
McGill, which improved to 8-5 overall, now has a 35-day break for exams and holidays. They resume play on Jan.3, with a non-conference game against Windsor at Love Competition Hall in a 1 p.m. tip-off. The Lancers are 13-7 overall and 7-3 in OUA play. The Martlets will then return to regular season play with a home-and-home against UQAM on Jan. 9 and !!.
