Windsor women win exhibition hoops showdown as second semester gets underway

MONTREAL – Leah Tate scored a game-high 12 points and Kali Grootenboer contributed a double-double as the visiting Windsor Lancers defeated McGill 69-60 in Friday matinee women's basketball non-conference action at Love Competition Hall.

It was a successful a homecoming for Lancers bench boss Chantal Vallée, a native Montrealer who previously served two seasons as an assistant coach at McGill (2000-2002), where she earned a master's degree. Vallée followed that with a three-year stint in charge of the local hoops program at Vanier College.

This marked the first game in more than a month for both teams and it showed as Windsor committed 26 turnovers, while McGill was charged with 22. The Lancers improved to 15-7 overall and the Martlets dropped to 8-6. The visitors had a 45-40 edge in rebounding.

Windsor led 20-14 after the opening quarter and 38-29 at halftime. The rest of the game was a stalemate as Windsor took the third quarter 20-11 and McGill won the final stanza by an identical 20-11 margin.

Senior Emma-Jane Scotten of Ottawa paced the Martlets with 11 points, while teammates Lily Rose Chatila of Quebec City, and Erica Simeone, a first-year pre-Med student from Montreal, added nine and eight, respectively.

Tate was one of four Lancers in double digits, along with Reine Ndome (11), Julia Chiarot (10) and Grootenboer (10 pts, 10 rbs).

Windsor shot 39.7 per cent from the field (25/63), went 7-for-24 from three-point range and 12-for-16 from the free-throw line. The Martlets shot 34.4 per cent from the floor (22/64) and went 3-for-15 from the arc and 15-for-25 from the line.

Both teams will now return to regular season play, with second-place McGill (4-2) playing at last-place UQAM (0-6) on Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. Windsor (8-3), which is tied with Guelph for first in the OUA West, travels to Waterloo (5-6) on Jan. 10.
