Redbirds felled by Citadins in final college hoops contest of fall semester

MONTREAL – Georges Lefebvre of Montreal registered a double-double but it was all in vain as his McGill teammates suffered a 66-61 setback to the visiting UQAM Citadins in men's basketball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

It was the final game of the semester for the struggling Redbirds who dropped to 1-4 in the RSEQ conference. The result dropped McGill's lifetime against UQAM to 52-38 in 90 meetings overall.

The Redbirds led 15-13 after the opening quarter and clung to a 28-27 advantage heading into halftime. But the Redbirds stumbled in the third quarter, which UQAM won 25-18 for a 52-46 lead heading into the final stanza. McGill won the fourth quarter 15-14 but it was too little, too late.

UQAM, which evened its regular season record to 2-2, was paced by a 17-point performance from Karl-Thomas Laforest. He was joined in double digit scoring by teammates Samuel Cayo (11) and Steeven Diaz-Beljour (10).

For Lefebvre, it was his seventh double-double in 16 games overall. He shot 5-for-14, made his only three and went 5-for-8 from the charity stripe.

Other leading scores for the Redbirds were Luis Micourt (12), Saransh Padhy (12) and Noah Sincere (11).

Buttressed by a huge 51-38 edge in rebounding, the Citadins shot 33.8 per cent from the field (22/65) and made only four of 22 attempts from three-point range. McGill shot 33.9 per cent (19/56) and converted three of 20 treys.

The game featured a combined 53 personal fouls with one player from each side fouling out. The Citadins drained 18 of 26 free-throws, while the Redbirds went 20-for-32 from the line.

UQAM will close out its semester with a game at division-leading Bishop's (3-0) on Nov. 28, followed by a visit from Laval (1-3) on Nov. 30. The Redbirds wil have an eight-week break for exams and holidays, before resuming play on Jan. 3 with an exhibition game at Carleton, which leads to OUA East with an unblemished 9-0 record. McGill's regular season resumes on Jan. 9 at UQAM.
