Ravens outflap Redbirds in non-conference hoops confrontation at nation's capital

OTTAWA – Augustas Brazdeikis scored 18 points and was one of five Carleton players to reach double digits as the Ravens overwhelmed visiting McGill 85-54 in men's basketball non-conference action at the Raven's Nest in the nation's capital, Friday.

Carleton, which has won 11 consecutive games against McGill, owns a 29-16 overall record between these rivals.

This marked the first competition in more than a month for both teams as Carleton improved to 13-5 overall and the Redbirds tumbled to 4-13. The game featured 36 personal fouls – with three technical fouls against the visitors – and Carleton went to the free-throw line almost twice as many times as McGill. The Ravens were 22-for-36 from the line, compared to the Redbirds, who went 9-for-19.

McGill got off to good start, holding a 22-20 lead after the opening quarter but the wheels fell off after that. Carleton rallied to take a 39-35 edge into halftime, then outscored the Redbirds 26-14 in the third stanza and 20-5 in the final quarter.

Freshman Noah Sincere, a 6-foot-1 point-guard from Laval, Que., led the Redbirds with 13 points, while teammates Georges Lefebvre of Montreal and Alexis Messier of Gatineau, Que., contributed 11 and 10, respectively. Luis Micourt , a sophomore from Ottawa, added nine points and tied Lefebvre for the team rebounding high with eight.

Other leading scorers for the Ravens were Xavier Spence (17), Aubrey Dorey-Havens (11) and Marjok Okado (11).

Carleton had a commanding 44-29 advantage in rebounding and shot 41 per cent from the field (25/61), including a 13-for-32 effort from the charity stripe. McGill shot 34.7 per cent from the floor (18/55) and went 9-for-19 from downtown.

Carleton, which lost 60-52 to Concordia in the preseason,  will continue its non-conference schedule against Quebec-based schools when hosting Bishop's on Saturday. McGill (1-4) resumes its regular season calendar at UQAM (2-4) on Jan. 9 at 8 p.m.
