McGill’s Renaud named player of the year as RSEQ women's soccer laureates announced

MONTREAL – Chloe Renaud was voted player of the year and is among eight McGill University players honoured as the RSEQ women's soccer laureates were announced by the Quebec-based conference.

In voting conducted by the league's eight head coaches, the other major award winners Montreal's Blessing Mayi-Kith (rookie of the year), Sherbrooke's Karina Fortier (leadership and citizenship award) and Sherbrooke bench boss Tony Perrier (coach of the year).

Renaud was one of four Martlets to earn a berth on the conference's first all-star squad, along with teammates Stephanie Hill, Mara Bouchard and Elisabeth Pronovost. Two Martlets were also named to the second team, with junior Giselle De Leon of Lavaltrie, Que., and senior Alexandra Hughes-Goyette of Squamish, B.C.  Two other McGillians earned all-rookie status, namely Emma Inciarte of Toronto and Vanessa Kumar, a native Montrealer.

Renaud, a 5-foot-5 midfielder from St. Hubert, Que., becomes the 12th McGill player to merit league MVP honours and the first since 2005. The three-time league all-star tallied 12 goals and added four assists to capture the RSEQ conference scoring crown and tied for fifth in the nation among goal leaders. The 21-year-old psychology junior became the first member of the Martlets to score a dozen goals in 23 years, since Eva Melamed had 16 in 10 games during the 2001 season. Renaud, who only had one yellow card, scored against all six of the other teams in the Quebec league and found the net in 10 of the team's 14 games. She successfully completed 72 per cent of her pass attempts and successfully dribbled past an opponent 67 times. Credited with three winning goals, she was named three times as the team's player of the game, twice as the McGill athlete of the week and merited the RSEQ weekly honour once.

Hill, a fifth-year veteran who hails from Montreal, is a 22-year-old master's student in physical therapy. An imposing six-foot defender who merited All-Canadian status last year, she earns conference all-star status for the fourth time. She scored one goal and had one yellow card in nine league games, missing five due to injuries. She was twice named as McGill's player of the game, including the RSEQ semifinal.

Bouchard, a 23-year-old psychology senior from Granby, Que., is a four-time conference all-star and three-time All-Canadian. The 5-foot-4 midfielder had two assists and only one yellow card in 14 games.

Pronovost, a first-time all-star, is a 21-year-old from Chambly, Que. A science junior majoring in psychology, the 5-foot-5 midfielder scored twice and added an assist in 14 games. Pronovost was named three times as McGill's player of the game.

The division-leading Montreal Carabins matched McGill with four of 11 spots on the first team, which also included one player apiece from UQTR, Sherbrooke and UQAM. The second dream team was composed of three other members of the Carabins, along with two apiece from McGill, Laval and UQTR, and one player each from Sherbrooke and Concordia. The All-Rookie honours featured three players from the Carabins, plus two each from McGill, Sherbrooke and Laval, in addition to one from Bishop's and UQAM.
