SHERBROOKE –
Emilia Mastromatteo of Kenora, Ont., was triple golden and added a silver medal to merit swimmer of the meet honours after leading McGill to finish first of six teams in the women's division at the second RSEQ University Cup competition, Saturday.
The Martlets won gold in five of the 11 events, to go along with four silver medals and four bronzes. They tallied 548.5 points to outdistance second-place Ottawa (415.5). The Montreal Carabins were third with 224, followed by Laval (180), Sherbrooke (69) and UQTR (48).
Ranking second by McGill's 13 medals was Ottawa with eight (3-5-3), Montreal (1-0-4) and Laval (1-1-0). UQTR and Sherbrooke, the host team, were kept off the podium.
Mastromatteo, a 20-year-old science junior majoring in anatomy and cell biology, reached the U SPORTS qualifying standards in each of her four races. The 5-foot-6 sprinter set a school record in the 100-metre butterfly (1:01.30), in addition to winning the 100m breaststroke (1:10.25) and the 50m breast (31.61). Her second-place finish was in the 4x100 medley relay (4:15.30), where she swam the third leg. She now has two school records in as many meets, including the 50-metre butterfly (27.15) from the first race of the season (University Cup 1) held at McGill's Memorial pool.
"It was another successful meet for us," said McGill head coach
Peter Carpenter, in an understatement. "We had a huge number of personal best times which are quite rare at this time of year. Certainly one of the major highlights was Emilia breaking the school record in the 100 fly."
Among the other McGillians to strike gold was
Naomie Lo and
Iris Tinmouth.
Lo, a 21-year-old software engineering senior from Toronto, qualified for Nationals in the 400m medley relay with a winning time of 4:54.33.
Tinmouth, a 20-year-old microbiology and immunology junior from Comox, B.C., also qualified for Nationals, winning gold in the grueling 800m freestyle, where she was clocked in 8:59.72
"We're particularly proud of the team's resilience through a very tough training period" Carpenter noted. "They trained really hard yesterday and then they really showed up today. Both teams swam very well but whereas the women were particularly dominant at Cup 1 it was the men's team's turn to shine at Cup 2, putting in a dominant display."
The defending league champion Martlets have now captured each of the first two Cup meets. The next competition, Cup 3, will be hosted by Ottawa on Nov. 9.
