MONTREAL – A week-long sesquicentennial celebration marking the anniversary of the first intercollegiate meeting of rugby-style football on Canadian soil in 1874, will be the focus of the McGill University Homecoming Game when the regular season concludes this weekend.
 
The visiting Concordia Stingers will confront McGill on Friday (Oct. 25) in the 55th edition of the Shaughnessy Cup football game in a 7 p.m. kickoff at venerable Percival Molson Stadium, which turned 109 years old on Oct. 22. Also at stake is a playoff berth in the RSEQ conference playoffs, as both teams have identical 2-5 records and could finish anywhere from third to fifth place in the five-team Quebec league.
 
The festivities began in earnest last Saturday when the McGill Redbirds rugby team overpowered Harvard 57-0 to capture the Covo Cup. That game marked the 150th anniversary of the historic McGill-Harvard series in 1874, when the two schools first met in Cambridge, Mass., on May 15, 1874, followed five months later by a return match in Montreal on Oct. 23, 1874.
 
This week's celebrations will be bolstered by the appearance of two prominent McGill football alumni who were both drafted and played in the National Football League, namely Dr. Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (MDCM '18) and Randy Chevrier (BEd '01). The former, known affectionately as "LDT", was selected by Kansas City (2014), where he won a Super Bowl ring in 2020 and he later played for the New York Jets. Chevrier, who was drafted by Jacksonville in 2001 and played for both Dallas and Cincinnati, went on to a lengthy CFL career, collecting three Grey Cup rings along the way. He will be among five new laureates inducted to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame on Friday.
 
The 150th anniversary will be highlighted at the football game, where the Redbirds will be wearing their new-look white helmets, adorned with a special red-coloured 150 decal. A bronze plaque which commemorates the 150th celebration will be unveiled in a halftime ceremony.
 
A pre-game tailgate party, organized by the Friends of McGill Football, an alumni support group, is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, in the Tomlinson Fieldhouse, located at the east end of the McGill Sports Cente.
 
Among the hundreds of McGill football alumni who have confirmed their attendance is recent Canadian Football Hall of Fame inductee Jacques Dussault, along with Marc Lacelle, Marc Santerre, Gary Kirchner, Dennis Waide, Sonny Wolfe, Mike Maurovich, Glenn Miller, Robin Bélanger, Vincent Gagné and Jesse Briggs, a two-time Grey Cup champion who is now coaching with the Redbirds.
 
A crowd in excess of 5,000 is expected to attend the game. Tickets will only be available online at $23 (general admission), $13 (for senior citizens, McGill staff and students with ID card) and $5 (youths 16 and under).
 
The game will also be available on the McGill Streaming Network for those who have a registered account (only $8 per game) and live stats will be online.

McGill célébrera le 150e anniversaire de football contre Concordia lors du match des Retrouvailles pour la Coupe Shaughnessy
 
MONTRÉAL - Une semaine de célébrations du sesquicentenaire marquant l'anniversaire de la première rencontre interuniversitaire de football de style rugby en sol canadien, en 1874, sera au cœur du match des Retrouvailles de l'Université McGill lors de clôture de la saison régulière ce week-end.

Les Stingers de Concordia affronteront McGill vendredi le 25 octobre lors de la 55e édition de la Coupe Shaughnessy. Le coup d'envoi sera donné à 19 h au vénérable stade Percival Molson, qui a fêté ses 109 ans le 22 octobre. L'enjeu est également une place dans les séries éliminatoires du RSEQ, puisque les deux équipes ont des fiches identiques de 2-5 et pourraient terminer entre la troisième et la cinquième position de la ligue québécoise.

Les festivités du 150e ont commencé samedi dernier, lorsque l'équipe de rugby des Redbirds de McGill a vaincu Harvard par la marque de 57 à 0 pour remporter la Coupe Covo. Ce match marquait le 150e anniversaire de la série historique McGill-Harvard de 1874, lorsque les deux écoles se sont rencontrées pour la première fois à Cambridge (Massachusetts) le 15 mai 1874, suivie cinq mois plus tard d'un match retour à Montréal le 23 octobre 1874.

Les célébrations de cette semaine seront rehaussées par la présence de deux éminents anciens de McGill qui ont été repêchés et ont joué dans la « NFL », à savoir le Dr Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (MDCM '18) et Randy Chevrier (BEd '01). Le premier, surnommé affectueusement « LDT », a été sélectionné par Kansas City (2014), où il a remporté une bague du Super Bowl en 2020 et a ensuite joué pour les Jets de New York.
 
Chevrier, qui a été repêché par Jacksonville en 2001 et a joué pour Dallas et Cincinnati, a poursuivi une longue carrière dans la LCF, récoltant au passage trois bagues de la Coupe Grey. Il fera partie des cinq nouveaux lauréats intronisés au Temple de la renommée des sports de McGill vendredi.

Le 150e anniversaire sera souligné lors du match de football, où les Redbirds porteront leurs nouveaux casques blancs, ornés d'un autocollant spécial du 150e de couleur rouge. Une plaque de bronze commémorant la célébration du 150e sera dévoilée lors d'une cérémonie à la mi-temps.

Une célébration d'avant-match est prévue de 17 h à 19 h derrière la zone des buts « est » du stade Percival-Molson.

Parmi les centaines d'anciens joueurs de McGill qui ont confirmé leur présence, mentionnons Jacques Dussault, récemment intronisé au Temple de la renommée du football canadien, ainsi que Marc Lacelle, Marc Santerre, Gary Kirchner, Dennis Waide, Sonny Wolfe, Mike Maurovich, Glenn Miller, Robin Bélanger, Vincent Gagné et Jesse Briggs, deux fois champion de la Coupe Grey, qui est maintenant un entraîneur-adjoint avec les Redbirds.

On s'attend à ce que plus de 5 000 personnes assistent au match. Les  billets seront disponibles en ligne seulement, au prix de 23 $ (admission générale), 13 $ (pour les personnes âgées, le personnel de McGill et les étudiants munis d'une carte d'identité) et 5 $ (pour les jeunes de 16 ans et moins).

Le match sera également disponible en ligne sur le « McGill Streaming Network » pour seulement 8 $ par match.
