Tourney all-star Chatila paces Martlets but team falls in final to StFX at McGill Basketball Classic

MONTREAL – Five players reached double digits in scoring for visiting St. Francis Xavier as they defeated McGill 81-61 to go undefeated and claim the women's side of the McGill Basketball Classic preseason tournament, Sunday, at Love Competition Hall.

Both teams entered the final round of the three-day competition with a 2-0 record. McGill had won the tourney opener 75-50 over UNBC on Friday, then defeated Laurentian 51-42 on Day 2.

The X-Women won all four quarters, leading 19-14 after the first, and 38-28 at half time. They dominated the third quarter with a 26-17 margin and held a 17-16 edge in the final stanza. StFX had a 44-34 advantage in rebounds and benefitted from a 22-16 difference in turnovers.

Lauren Neeve and Kristine Cooper led the visitors with 16 points apiece.  Neeve was voted Tournament MVP and joined teammate Ekaterina Karchevskaya on the tourney all-star honour roll.

The Martlets had three players in double digits, led by Lily Rose Chatila (12 points), Seyna Digs (10) and Emilia Diaz-Ruiz (10).

Chatila earned all-tournament honours for the second straight year at the McGill Classic. Over the three games, she scored a team-leading 39 points, to go along with 11 rebounds, nine assists and five steals. The 5-foot-6 point-guard shot 16-for-44 from the floor, 5-for-20 from the three-point arc and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.

Other tourney all-stars were Emilie Lafond of Laurentian and Sveta Boykova from UNBC.

McGill, which finished preseason play with a 4-3 record, will host Laval in the RSEQ regular season opener on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m., followed by a visit from Concordia on Nov. 9 at the Sir Arthur Currie Gym.
