MONTREAL – Rookie
Loic Courville-Fortin of Repentigny, Que., won four gold medals and was named male swimmer of the meet as McGill won the men's division at the RSEQ conference's Cup 1 meet to open the season on Friday, at the University's Memorial Pool.
The defending league champion McGill Redbirds finished first of six teams with 544.5 points, well ahead of second-place Ottawa (326). The Montreal Carabins were third at 272, followed by Laval (241), Sherbrooke (125) and UQTR (60.5).
The Redbirds also dominated the medal count. In the 11 events, they produced 14 podium finishes, including eight golds, one silver and five bronzes. Ottawa was next with six medals (2-3-1), followed by Montreal (1-5-0), Laval (0-0-3), Sherbrooke (0-1-1) and UQTR (0-1-1).
"We have a strong team and even with a number of key figures out of our line up on the day we have incredible depth that can fill in and get the job done," said McGill head coach
Peter Carpenter. "Many of our first-year swimmers achieved personal best times showing that they are adapting well to the training plan, so we hope to be able to continue pushing forward."
Courville-Fortin, a 20-year-old science freshman majoring in biochemistry, finished atop the podium in the 200-metre individual medley (2:02.44), the 50 backstroke (25:33), the 100 back (64.73) and swam leadoff on the winning 4x50m medley relay (1:49.90). He reached the qualification standard for nationals in each event.
