Sizzling Citadins sink 15 treys en route to grounding Redbirds in college hoops

MONTREAL – McFadden Jean of St. Hubert, Que., scored a game-high 19 points as division-leading UQAM cruised to a 99-62 victory over visiting McGill, in RSEQ men's basketball at Terrain Olga Hrycak, Thursday,

The Citadins, who improved to 8-1, led 20-13 after the first quarter, 52-33 at halftime and 72-50 after three quarters, then took the final frame 27-12.  UQAM scored 45 points on treys, going 15-for-36 from downtown, compared to McGill, which shot 4-for-19. The Redbirds committed a season-high 30 turnovers that led to 39 points for UQAM. The Citadins had only 17 turnovers that translated into 13 points.

Senior Cameron Elliot of Ottawa and Benjamin Onyenwosa of Prince George, B.C., a first-year transfer from UNBC, paced the Redbirds with 10 points apiece.

Four UQAM players reached double figures, including Kevin Civil (17 pts), Quincy Louis-Jeune (15) and Bahaide Aidara (13).

UQAM shot a sizzling 53.6 per cent from the floor (37/69) and drained 10 of 15 from the line. McGill, which had a 33-30 edge in rebounds, shot 41.4 per cent from the field (24/58) and went 10-for-16 from the stripe.

McGill, the only team to defeat UQAM this season, dropped its fifth consecutive contest and now stands at 1-10. There is light at the end of the tunnel, however, as the Redbirds trail fourth-place Laval (2-7) by only two points with five games remaining, three of them against the Rouge et Or.

McGill will look to split the four-game season series against UQAM when they confront each other again on Saturday (Jan. 27) in a 4 p.m. tip-off at Love Competition Hall. An alumni reception is planned after the game.
