Division-leading Citadins overwhelm Redbirds in cage match

MONTREAL – A half-dozen UQAM players reached double figures in scoring en route to a 93-59 decision over McGill in men's basketball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

The division-leading Citadins improved to 9-1 atop the RSEQ standings, while a youthful McGill squad dropped to 1-11. The good news for the home side, however, is that McGill remains only one win shy of fourth-place Laval (2-8), which currently occupies the final playoff berth. With four games remaining, the Redbirds have control of their destiny as three upcoming games are slated against the Rouge et Or.

UQAM led 21-11 after the first quarter, 53-23 at half time and 77-45 after three. They drained 13 of 18 freebies, compared to the Redbirds, who made just nine trips to the free-throw line and came away with six points.

Quincy Louis-Jeune paced the visitors with 15 points, while teammates Elie Karojo and Samuel Cayo added 13 apiece. Kevin Civil and Karl-Tommy Laforest both poured in a dozen and Bahalde Haidara contributed 10.

McGill, which lost for the sixth consecutive outing, was able to counter with only two players in double figures, led by 12 points off the bench from freshman Jeremy Han and 10 from senior Sean Herscovitch. Two other rookies added nine each, namely Joshua Soifer and Benjamin Onyenwosa.

The Citadins shot an impressive 50 per cent from the field (34/68), with a 12-for-36 effort from the arc. The Redbirds were no match, shooting 37.1 per cent from the floor (23/62) and 7-for-25 from downtown.

The Redbirds have a chance to salvage a difficult season as a playoff carrot is dangling in front of their heads. Laval will visit Love Competition Hall on Thursday (Feb. 8) in an 8 p.m. tip-off before the return match in Quebec City on Feb. 10. McGill will then conclude the regular season with the Lengvari Cup game against Concordia (Feb. 12) and Laval (Feb. 24), both of them at home.
