Second-place Pats take advantage of shorthanded Redbirds as red card proves costly

TROIS-RIVIERES, QUE – UQTR's Vincent Lamy scored the winning tally in the 62nd minute against a shorthanded McGill lineup as the Patriotes came away with a 2-1 victory in men's university soccer, Thursday.

UQTR had opened the scoring on Mahdi Abbassi's marker in the 28th minute but McGill answered 10 minutes later when Nathan Yee knotted the score at 1-1. It was the second goal of the season for Yee, a management freshman from Richmond, B.C.

Moments later, Redbirds striker Joseph Getz, a junior from Vancouver, B.C., was red-carded after drawing his second yellow. In total, four cards were issued in the contest, all of them to the visitors.

The Patriotes took advantage of the ejection to press and had a 12-4 advantage in attempted shots, including an 8-2 margin on net. The Redbirds had a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.

UQTR 'keeper Mathieu Lacharite made one save for the victory. McGill senior Chris Cinelli-Faia of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., made his first start of the season and was credited with four saves in losing cause. It was the second straight game for the Redbirds without starting netminder Ludovyck Ciociola, who was injured in a 3-2 loss against UQAM on Sept. 17, then played the next game, a 2-0 win at Sherbrooke, before being sidelined.

McGill has now dropped three straight games to the Pats since a 1-0 victory on Sept. 16, 2022 and hasn't won in Trois-Rivieres since a 4-0 decision on Oct. 20, 2013.

It was a tough setback for McGill, which sits sixth in the seven-team RSEQ conference with a 2-5-2 record. With four games remaining on the schedule, the Redbirds are three points behind the last playoff berth, currently occupied by UQAM (3-2-1), which holds two games in hand.

McGill will host the division-leading Montreal Carabins (6-0-1) on Sunday (Oct. 1) in a 3 p.m. matinee at Percival Molson Stadium. In their only previous rendezvous his season, UdeM scored a late goal to come away with a 2-1 decision at home on Sept. 8.

UQTR, which sits in second place with a 5-3-0 record, is three points behind the Carabins and will host fifth-place Concordia (2-3-2) on Oct. 1.
