Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Earl Zukerman

Guilmette collects eighth career shutout as soccer squad settles for scoreless saw-off against Citadins

MONTREAL – Goalkeeper Sophie Guilmette of Montreal, registered a two-save shutout, as the McGill women's soccer team battled UQAM  to a 0-0 deadlock, Sunday, at Molson Stadium. It was her third clean sheet in six games this season and one shy of the league lead. The second-year transfer from Vanderbilt now has eight career goose-eggs in 19 regular season contests with the Martlets.

The result was a disappointing for the Martlets, who sit third in the eight-team RSEQ conference with a 3-2-1 record. The lower-seeded Citadins are in sixth place with a 1-3-2 record.

"As much as not giving up a goal and remaining undefeated at home is very positive, the team was (striving) for a win and the three points," said McGill head coach Jose-Luis Valdes. "Our opponents defended very well and limited us to few dangerous chances towards their goal which we did not capitalize on.  We did appear to score one but it was called off-side, I will have to confirm that on video but regardless nothing will change and more importantly we need to be dangerous more often."

UQAM had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks but McGill had a 18-8 advantage in attempted shots, including a 6-2 margin on net. But they couldn't solve UQAM netminder Andreanne Dubeau, who posted a six-save shutout.

The Citadins were whistled for 18 of the 27 fouls and two of five yellow cards issued by the referee.

"There was a bit of a scene with referees which caused three yellow cards to be issued against us, including one to myself," Valdes added. "All cards were merited, however they could have been avoided if the fourth official would have done equipment verification at the time of a substitution.  He apologized to me after the game but that will not change the card situation unfortunately."

The league tracks all cards and when a player or coach has accumulated three yellows, or a red, they face an automatic one-game suspension.

It was McGill's second consecutive scoreless draw with UQAM, dating back to Sept. 30, 2022, when the Martlets produced a similar result. That was their first 0-0 tie in 19 regular season contests, dating back to a stalemate at Bishop's on Sept. 26, 2021.

Both teams return to the pitch on Sept. 22, when UQAM will host Montreal (4-1-1) and McGill travels to Sherbrooke (2-3-1).
