Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Earl Zukerman

Spectacular scoring spectacle settled by Citadins soccer squad on last-second shot

MONTREAL – Gregory David scored on a free kick with 10 seconds remaining in injury time as the visiting UQAM Citadins salvaged a wild 3-2 victory over McGill in men's university soccer at Molson Stadium, Sunday.

The game featured five goals on 30 attempted shots, three penalty kicks and nine yellow cards.

Nassim Kemel, a freshman midfielder from Algeria, tallied twice in a losing cause for the Redbirds, including the opening goal in the 10th minute of play. He later tied the game at 2-2 on a successful penalty kick in injury time, only to see his efforts go for naught when UQAM was awarded a free kick from 20 yards out only a minute later. The call was one for the books as the referee initially ruled no foul on McGill rookie forward Mathis Cyr who was defending just inside the box but the head official was convinced otherwise by a linesman stationed on the sideline.

On the play, David stepped up and fired a perfectly-place low shot along the ground to the right of the wall of defenders and it skipped untouched inside the far right goal post.

Earlier, UQAM had tied the game at 1-1 on an own goal in the 24th minute when the aforementioned David took a shot from the 36-yard marker on the sideline. His high-arcing volley was accidently headed into the net by a McGill defender. The Citadins then went ahead 2-1 when Alexis Jeanne, the league's rookie of the year last season, found the back of the net on a penalty-kick in the 58th minute.

Nine minutes later, McGill missed a glorious opportunity when junior midfielder Kyle Azura shot wide on a penalty kick in the 58th minute. It was the second PK miss by a McGill player this season.

UQAM 'keeper Martin Cantona saved six of eight shots for the win, while McGiill sophomore Ludovyck Ciociola turned aside five of eight shots and took the loss.

The Redbirds had a territorial advantage with a 20-10 edge in attempted shots, including a 9-8 margin on net. The home side also had four corners, while UQAM had none. The Citadins were flagged for nine of 16 fouls in the game but McGill took five of the nine yellow cards issued.

It was a costly setback for McGill, which dropped to 1-3-1 and tumbled to sixth place in the seven-team RSEQ conference. UQAM sits third in the league at 3-1-1. Both teams return to play on Sept. 22, when UQAM will host Montreal (4-0-1) and McGill travels to Sherbrooke (0-5-0).
