SHERBROOKE, QUE – A pair of rookies scored second-half goals minutes apart as McGill blanked winless Sherbrooke 2-0 in men's university soccer action at Terrain de la Nouveau Concorde, Friday.
Striker
Mathis Cyr, a 20-year-old political science freshman from Riviere du Loup, Que., scored the game-winner in the 75th minute of play. Just two minutes later,
Lefika Noko, a 17-year-old management freshman from Geneva, in Switzerland, came off the bench to add an insurance marker.
Ludovyck Ciociola, a six-foot, 173-pound goalkeeper from Montreal, posted five saves for the shutout. The 22-year-old physical education sophomore now has two clean sheets this season, as his record improved to 2-3-1.
The game was scoreless at halftime before McGill finally solved how to beat Sherbrooke 'keeper
Thomas Goddaert, who allowed a pair of goals on eight shots and took the loss.
McGill, which had an 8-5 edge in shots on net, took three of the five cards handed out by the referee. Cyr,
Stuart Klenner and
Yannick Laurent were flagged for the Redbirds, while
Maxime Bourgeois and
David Harrison were cautioned for the Vert & Or.
The result, combined with Concordia's 2-1 loss to visiting Laval, improved McGill's record to 2-3-1 and moved the Redbirds into fifth place, two points ahead of the Stingers (1-3-2). McGill is three points in arrears of fourth-place Laval (3-2-1) for the final playoff berth in the seven-team RSEQ conference. The Redbirds will play at Concordia on Sunday (Sept. 24) at 1 p.m. With only six games left in the regular season, that cross-town clash is critical for both sides.
