MONTREAL – Quarterback
Olivier Roy threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns as Concordia defeated McGill 42-24 in the 35th annual Montreal Shrine Bowl football game at Concordia Stadium, Saturday.
Over the past four decades, this annual contest, which uses the motto "Strong legs run so that weak legs may walk", has raised over $1 million for the Shriners Hospital for Children - Canada Research Centre, in Montreal.
Concordia jumped into a 17-0 lead in the opening quarter but the Redbirds narrowed the gap to 25-14 by halftime. McGill further reduced the deficit to 25-17 after three quarters but the Stingers outscored the visitors 17-7 in the final stanza.
The Stingers had a 24-22 edge in first downs and generated 423 net yards compared to 321 by McGill. The Redbirds were penalized 15 times for 126 yards, while Concordia was flagged 10 times for 75 yards. The Stingers also had a 4-1 margin in quarterback sacks.
Roy completed 16 of 35 attempts and was picked off once. He found three receivers in the endzone, including
Tristan Mancini on a 19-yard pass,
Martin Blain on a 75-yard play and
Mathieu Robitaille on a 21-yard toss.
For McGill, quarterback
Eloa Latendresse-Regimbald scored on a four-yard run, his fourth rushing TD in as many games. He also found receiver
Darius Simmons for a three-yard toss to reduce Concordia's lead to 17-14.
The sophomore pivot from Montreal rushed for a game-high 107 yards on 10 carries and was 15-for-27 passing, for 156 yards, one TD and no interceptions. His favourite target was Simmons, who caught 10 balls for 108 yards and was also credited with eight rushing yards on two carries. Both McGill players were the game's only players to breach the century mark in all-purpose yards.
Also scoring for the Redbirds was
Jeffrey Amisial-Chatelier, a junior running back from Repentigny, Que., who rushed for a 13-yard TD early in the fourth quarter. Kicker
Antoine Couture added a 44-yard field-goal and three conversions.
Rounding out the scoring for Concordia was kicker
Eric Maximuik, who contributed nine points on the strength of a 41-yard field-goal, five conversions, a 71-yard punt single and a rouge on an 80-yard kickoff. They also had a safety conceded in the McGill endzone.
Next week, McGill (1-3) is on a bye, while Concordia (2-1) will host Laval (2-1). The next Redbirds game will be on Sept. 30, when Laval returns to Montreal to kick-off in a 1 pm start at Percival Molson Stadium.
