MONTREAL – Sophomore quarterback
Eloa Latendresse-Regimbald rushed for a pair of touchdowns but McGill was no match for the No. 3 ranked Laval Rouge et Or, who cruised to a 46-14 victory at Percival Molson Stadium, Saturday.
Laval pivot
Arnaud Desjardins was 21 for 25 passing for 263 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed six times for 55 yards and one TD.
The defending national champions led 10-0 after the opening quarter, 29-7 at halftime and 36-7 after three. Laval registered 27 first downs and generated 465 yards of net offence, compared to McGill's 17 and 235, respectively.
Latendresse-Regimbald, a native Montrealer, now leads the RSEQ conference scoring race with six touchdowns in five games. He was 15-for-32 passing, for 196 yards and two interceptions. He rushed eight times for 22 yards. His favourite target was
Darius Simmons, who snared six passes for 98 yards.
McGill's
Brandon Ciccarello led all players with a game-high 148 all-purpose yards. He ran back six kickoff returns for 1-06 yards and collected 46 yards on seven carries. The sophomore running back leads the conference in rushing yards (308) and all-purpose yards (744).
Laval's
Edouard Arsenault was the only receiver to reach the century mark with 102 yards on six receptions, including a 40-yard TD toss from Desjardins to put Laval ahead 29-7 late in the second quarter and put the game out of reach.
Guillaume Cauchon had the highlight of the day with a 100-yard punt return TD early in the final quarter. Other Rouge et Or majors were scored by
Isaac Gaillardetz and
Frederic Antoine in passing plays of 18 and six yards, respectively. Kicker
Vincent Blanchard rounded out the scoring for Laval, with 14 points, including field-goals from distances of 43, 24 and 46 yards.
Both teams combined for 18 penalties for 213 yards of real estate, split almost equally. Laval had only one fumble compared to four by McGill, which committed two of them on third-down conversion attempts. Laval had the upper-hand in QB sacks by a 3-2 margin.
McGill, which dropped to 1-5, remains in the fourth playoff berth, two points behind third-place Concordia (2-2) and two ahead of fifth-place Sherbrooke (0-5). The Redbirds will the division-leading Montreal Carabins (5-0) on Friday, Oct. 6 in a 7 pm kickoff at Molson Stadium.
The second-place Rouge et Or (4-1) will host Concordia on Oct. 8.
