MONTREAL – Two distance runners from McGill University reached the podium and led the host team to its first McGill Invitational cross-country meet men's title in eight years, at the RSEQ season opening race held Saturday, along the slopes of Mt. Royal Park.
Thomas Laviolette of the Montreal Carabins won the six-kilometre race in record time, finishing atop the podium just ahead of McGill teammates
Noah El Rimawi-Fine of Keene Valley, N.Y., and
Jerome Jacques of St. Lambert, Que.
It was only the fourth time since this meet was established in 1992 that McGill captured the men's division, a banner they previously claimed in 2015, 2002 and 1994. The Redbirds placed runners in second, third, fourth, fifth and seventh to score 21 points and finish first of 11 schools in the team scoring. Laval placed second with 68 points, followed by Sherbrooke (70), Montreal (85), ETS (148), UQAM (178), Concordia (202), College Militaire Royal (243), Ottawa (283), Carleton (284) and UQAC (289).
Laviolette was first of 112 runners, crossing the finish line in 18 minutes, 47 seconds to erase the course record of 18:59 set last year by Laval's
Philippe Mourneau-Cartier.
El Rimawi-Fine, a fifth-year senior majoring in computer science, was second in 19:01. He was followed by Jacques, a kinesiology sophomore, who was clocked in 19:18. Other scorers for McGill were veteran
Jack Stanley (4th, 19:19) of Victoria, B.C.,
Devin Chapple (5th, 19:20) of Toronto and
Thomas Windisch (7th, 19:21) of Sherbrooke.
Sherbrooke won the women's side, with McGill finishing fourth of six teams (

The next meet will be the Western Invitational in London, Ont., Sept. 23.
