MONTREAL – Sienna Matheson was the top McGill runner with a silver-medal finish as the Martlets placed fourth at the RSEQ women's cross-country season opener, the ETS-UQAM Invitational, held at Parc Marcel-Laurin, Saturday.

Matheson, a 21-year-old chemistry senior from Kingston, Ont., completed the six-kilometre course in 22 minutes, 32.95 seconds. She finished 44.13 seconds behind Laval's Béatrice Fillion, who won the 83-runner race in 21:48.82. Laval teammate Camille Boudreau claimed bronze in 22:35.74.

McGill placed two runners among the top eight. Joining Mathesan was freshman Julianna Woolfenden, who crossed the finish line eighth overall in 23:12.56. The other three Martlets who figured in the team scoring were Macy Putka, who placed 32nd in 24:47.21, Ena Smailbegovic, who was 36th in 24:59.22, and Zoe Couture, who finished 37th in 24:59.34.

Those five combined for 115 points as McGill finished fourth in the nine-team field. Laval won the meet with 37 points, followed by UQTR with 65 and the Montreal Carabins with 86. McGill was next at 115, followed by Sherbrooke (142), Concordia (185), UQAC (203), UQAM (260) and UQAR (349).

McGill also had two other finishers. Mila Degand was 46th in 25:34.20 and Katherine McKinley placed 64th in 26:47.55.

The Martlets return to action Sept. 26 at the Capital Cross-country Challenge, a 6K meet hosted by Carleton at Mooney's Bay Park in Ottawa.

La coureuse de fond de McGill mène les Martlets au quatrième rang parmi neuf équipes lors de l'Invitation ÉTS-UQAM

MONTRÉAL – Sienna Matheson a été la meilleure représentante de McGill en remportant la médaille d'argent, tandis que les Martlets ont terminé au quatrième rang à l'Invitation ÉTS-UQAM, première compétition de la saison féminine de cross-country du RSEQ, disputée samedi au parc Marcel-Laurin.

Matheson, une étudiante de quatrième année en chimie âgée de 21 ans et originaire de Kingston, en Ontario, a bouclé le parcours de six kilomètres en 22 minutes 32,95 secondes. Elle a terminé à 44,13 secondes de Béatrice Fillion, de Laval, qui a remporté la course réunissant 83 participantes en 21:48,82. Sa coéquipière Camille Boudreau a décroché la médaille de bronze en 22:35,74.

McGill a placé deux coureuses parmi les huit premières. Derrière Matheson, la recrue Julianna Woolfenden a franchi la ligne d'arrivée au huitième rang en 23:12,56. Les trois autres Martlets ayant contribué au pointage de l'équipe ont été Macy Putka, 32e en 24:47,21; Ena Smailbegovic, 36e en 24:59,22; et Zoe Couture, 37e en 24:59,34.

Ce quintette a totalisé 115 points, permettant à McGill de terminer au quatrième rang parmi les neuf équipes. Laval a remporté la compétition avec 37 points, devant l'UQTR (65), les Carabins de Montréal (86), McGill (115), Sherbrooke (142), Concordia (185), l'UQAC (203), l'UQAM (260) et l'UQAR (349).

Deux autres représentantes de McGill ont également complété l'épreuve. Mila Degand a pris le 46e rang en 25:34,20, tandis que Katherine McKinley s'est classée 64e en 26:47,55.

Les Martlets reprendront l'action le 26 septembre à l'occasion du Capital Cross-country Challenge, une course de 6 km organisée par Carleton au parc Mooney's Bay, à Ottawa.
