QUEBEC CITY -- No.1 ranked Laval broke open a scoreless draw with five second half goals en route to a 5-1 victory over visiting McGill on Friday.
The Rouget et Or improved to 4-0 on the season and stretched their undefeated streak to 5-0-2 in head-to-head play since the last Martlets victory, a 2-1 home-field decision on Oct. 20, 2019.
Lea-Jeanne Fortier opened the scoring for the home side in the 47th minute but
Liliane Lefebvre, a senior striker from Toronto, knotted the count at 1-1 in the 61st minute. Then a tidal wave struck with goals from
Emmanuelle Collin (64th minute),
Daphnee Blouin (65th),
Rosalie Robitaille (74th) and
Laurie Roy (86th).
"We played a great first half and quickly refocused after giving up the first goal," said McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes. "But the second half was a different story as we lost our composure and focus."
The Martlets took 12 of the 19 fouls called in the contest and all five yellow cards issued by the referee. Laval had an 11-5 advantage in attempted shots, including a 6-5 margin in shots on target. They also had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Goalkeeper
Anne-Marie Laroche registered four saves and the win, while
Sophie Guilmette made one save and took the loss.
The Rouge et Or (4-0-0) will put their win streak on the line on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 17) when they travel to Montreal to confront the first-place Carabins (4-0-1) in a battle of undefeated teams.
McGill (3-2-0), which sits third in the eight-team RSEQ conference, will have a day off to get settled and refocused before hosting sixth-place UQAM (1-3-1) at Molson Stadium on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
