QUEBEC CITY -- Goalkeeper
Ludovyck Ciociola of Montreal registered a shutout, highlighted by a diving stop on a penalty kick in the 87th minute of play, as the McGill men's soccer team salvaged a scoreless draw against Laval in the provincial capital, Friday.
It was the second consecutive year that the Redbirds battled Laval to a saw-off on their own turf, including last-year's 1-1 deadlock on Sept. 18, 2022, which halted a four-game losing streak there.
Ciociola, a six-foot, 173-pound physical education sophomore, was credited with four saves in the contest but none were bigger that the spectacular dive to his left when Laval striker
Jerome Laplante was awarded a penalty kick with minutes remaining. Laplante had been sandwiched between two McGill players in the box and tripped over the extended leg of
Sacha Viti.

Horace Patient-Sobze-Zemo also registered the whitewash for his troops with a five-save performance.
It was a physical affair, with McGill taking 15 of the 29 fouls called, including both yellow cards. The Redbirds had a 10-6 advantage in shots attempted, including a 5-4 edge on net. The visitors also had a 6-2 margin in corners.
Laval (2-1-1), which is tied for third with UQAM in the seven-team RSEQ confeerence, gets a day off to recoup before heading out for a road game against the No. 1 ranked Montreal Carabins (3-0-1) on Sunday (Sept. 17) at 1 pm.
McGill (1-2-1), which sits in sixth place, can move into a tie for third with a victory over UQAM (2-1-1) at Molson Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m.
