LENNOXVILLE, QUE –
Rowan Birrell, a sophomore from North Vancouver, B.C., netted a hat-trick and added an assist as McGill coasted to a 9-2 victory in men's lacrosse to silence a crowd of over 700 in the kickoff to Bishop's Homecoming Week festivities at Coulter Field, Friday.
The Redbirds never trailed, leading 1-0 after the opening quarter, 3-1 at halftime, 6-1 after three, and then outscoring BU 3-1 in the final quarter.
"It was a good team win. We were able to get the entire dress roster into the game and that's important for their development," said third-year head coach
Nicolas Soubry. "There was a lot of banter from the crowd and the guys loved it."
Veteran
Isaiah Cree and sophomore midfielder
John Miraglia of Memphis, Tenn., each added a pair of goals. Teammate
Joshua Jewell, a sophomore from La Canada, Calif., was credited with the game-winner midway through the second quarter. Rounding out the Redbirds scoring was sophomore
Mark Symon of New Canaan, Conn.
"The fans were pretty vocal at the start and I love how quiet they got when we took control," said Cree, a fifth-year, international development studies major from Akwesasne, N.Y., who is coming back from an injury and only saw duty on the power-play unit. "We went up early, kept fighting, continued playing our game. Once we got rolling, we never stopped."
Bishop's was called for seven of the 13 penalties assessed by the referee.
Replying for the Gaiters was
Logan Forkey of Milton, Vt., and
Alex Lizotte of Billerica, Mass.
Veteran goaltender
Joseph Boehm started and collected the win for McGill, allowing one goal in 53 minutes. Sophomore
Henry Komosa of Potomac, Mass., played the final seven minutes between the pipes and conceded one goal.
Elie Sebastien took the loss for BU, giving up all nine goals.
McGill (1-1) has a quick turnaround and will host Carleton (1-0) in the Redbirds home opener on Saturday (Sept. 16) in a 7:30 p.m. start at Percival Molson Stadium. The two teams met in Ottawa last week and Carleton came out on top 10-5.
Bishop's (0-2) has an eight-day break to ponder a two-game losing streak before resuming it's schedule with a home game against Trent on Sept. 24.
