MONTREAL –
Joseph Getz, a striker from Vancouver, B.C., scored the game-winning tally as McGill coasted to a 3-0 victory over long-time rival Queen's in men's university preseason soccer at Percival Molson Stadium, Sunday.
Getz, an Arts junior, opened the scoring in the 20th minute of play. The Redbirds took a 2-0 lead just 10 minutes later when Algerian native
Nassim Kemel, a first-year transfer from the Montreal Carabins, connected.
Rounding out the scoring was midfielder
Esteban Roy, a management sophomore from Spain, who tallied in the 70th minute.
The shutout was shared between goalkeepers
Chris Cinelli-Faia of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., and
Gavin McFee, a psychology sophomore from Kelowna, B.C. Cinelli-Faia, a fifth-year senior, started and collected the win. He was replaced by McFee for the final 30 minutes. Shots on goal totals were not available.
At the opposite end of the field, senior
Manuel Dirube of Oakville, Ont., started, allowed all three goals and took the loss for the Gaels.
The only caution issued in the game was a yellow card to McGill freshman
Nathan Yee of Richmond, B.C.
The Redbirds went undefeated in preseason play with a 1-0-1 record and also had three scrimmages. They will now focus on the RSEQ regular season opener when UQTR visits Molson Stadium on Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 8:15 p.m. That game will serve as the nightcap of a doubleheader, which will be preceded by the women's game at 6 p.m.
Queen's, which went 0-1-1, in the preaseason, will open its OUA campaign on Aug. 31 at home to the U of T Varsity Blues.
