HAMILTON –
Benjamin Osset, a 19-year-old freshman from Bermuda, scored in the 90th minute of play as McGill rallied for a 1-1 draw with McMaster to open the preseason in men's university soccer on Wednesday afternoon at Ron Joyce Stadium.
This was the first meeting between these teams since Nov. 12, 2011, when McGill cruised to a 3-1 win over McMaster in the consolation final at the 2011 CIS men's soccer championship in Victoria, B.C.
The Marauders, who led 1-0 at halftime, opened the scoring in the 30th minute on a marker by
Ed Florent, a junior midfielder from Toronto. Teammate
Daniel Rajab was assessed the game's only yellow card.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ludovic Ciociola started between the pipes for the Redbirds and conceded one goal in his 45 minutes of play. He was relieved at halftime by senior
Chris Cinelli-Faia of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., who kept McMaster off the scoresheet and was credited with the tie.
Rookie
Jonathan Heazle went the distance in McMaster's net, allowing one goal and earning a draw.
McMaster (0-0-1) plays the Varsity Blues at U of T on Thursday at 2 p.m.
McGill (0-0-1) concludes their two-game road trip to southern Ontario with a scrimmage at Brock in St. Catharines, on Thursday (Aug. 24) at 1 p.m. The Redbirds will hold an open tryout session (with a registration fee of $20) for full-time McGill students on Sept. 5, from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Molson Stadium.
