MONTREAL – The major award nominees have been announced for McGill University's 45th annual athletics awards gala, to be held on April 11 (5:30 p.m.) at Plaza Centre-Ville on Boulevard Robert Bourassa.
Five nominees are in the running for the Major D. Stuart Forbes Trophy, presented to the male student-athlete who has brought the most credit to the University by reason of his athletic achievements.
The finalists include All-Canadians
Pablo Collin (swimming) and
Matthew Beaudet (cross-country / track), who were both voted as their league's respective athlete of the year.
Rounding out the group are conference all-stars
Scott Walford (hockey), who helped Canada win gold at the FISU World University Games,
Monty Weatherall (rugby), who won the league scoring title and football quarterback
Eloa Latendresse-Regimbald, who was named U SPORTS rookie of the year.
On the women's side, five nominees are vying for the Gladys Bean Trophy, awarded to the female athlete of the year. The finalists include
Isabel Sarty (swimming) and
Eliana Zhang (badminton), each selected as conference athlete of the year in their respective sports.
Other finalists are All-Canadians
Mara Bouchard (soccer) and
Charlene Robitaille (volleyball), along with conference all-star
Donna Ntambue (track & field), who broke a school record in the 60-metre dash.
In all, 11 major trophies will be presented at the event, in addition to MVP awards for 26 varsity teams. Here is a brief look at all the finalists.

Swimming (w): won RSEQ championship (16 golds, 9 silvers, 8 bronzes), won all five league meets overall, qualified 18 women for nationals, placed THIRD of 24 teams at U SPORTS national championship in Victoria, B.C, where they won two bronzes; had 11 conference all-stars (10 on first team).
Swimming (m): won RSEQ championship (8 golds, 7 silvers, 9 bronzes), won three of five league meets overall, qualified 17 men for nationals, placed FIFTH of 24 teams at U SPORTS national championship in Victoria, B.C., where they won two golds and three bronzes; had 11 conference all-stars (10 on first team) and one All-Canadian (first team).
Volleyball (w): 23-14 overall record, 12-6 regular season, 2-5 in playoffs, finished 2nd in eight-team league, conference finalists; qualified for U SPORTS Final 8 championship in Vancouver, B.C., and finished tied for SEVENTH.
HARRY GRIFFITHS TROPHY NOMINEES
(non U SPORTS Varsity Club of the Year)
Rugby (m), 10-2 overall record; 6-1 regular season; 4-1 in playoffs; finished 1st in eight-team league; won RSEQ championship; finished SECOND at national championship Final 8; had seven conference all-stars; raised over $45,800 on McGill24 fundraiser.
Lacrosse (m): 8-5 overall record; 6-4 regular season; 2-1 in playoffs; finished FOURTH in seventh-team league; pulled off two upsets in the post-season and qualified for CUFLA Final 6 national championship, where they tied for third; had one conference all-star; raised over $28,000 on McGill24 fundraiser.
Artistic Swimming (w): McGILL INVITATIONAL: finished THIRD of 13 entries in experienced team routine and FIRST of six in the novice team routine; EASTERN CHAMPIONSHIP (Markham, Ont): finished SECOND of 15 entries in experienced team routine and FIRST of seven in the novice team routine; CUASL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP (Markham, Ont): finished ELEVENTH of 20 entries in the experienced division team routine and FIRST of 11 entries in the novice division team routine; raised over $3,800 on McGill24 fundraiser.
