SASKATOON, SASK –
Matthew Beaudet of McGill University has been named as the track athlete of the year at the U SPORTS major awards luncheon held Thursday, prior to the 2023 national indoor track and field championships in Saskatoon, March 9-11.
This is the third U SPORTS major award in two years for Beaudet, a 23-year-old electrical engineering junior from Montreal's NDG borough, who merited rookie-of-the-year honours in both cross-country and track last season. He has also earned All-Canadian honours three times over the two sports, meriting first-team status in both during the 2021-22 campaign and second-team status in cross-country last fall.
The 5-foot-9, 145-pound distance runner from Montreal's NDG borough, set school records this season in both the 1,500m (3:48.01) and 3,000m (8:18.75). At the RSEQ conference championships last month, he won gold in both events in addition to running the anchor leg of McGill's winning 4x800 relay (7:40.03). Beaudet actually surpassed both times during his split times while running 5k and one-mile races at separate meets held in Boston over the season, which do not count as official McGill records. A week before the RSEQ conference title meet, he helped guide Canada to an eighth-place finish at the world cross-country championships in Australia.
Joining Beaudet among the other men's award recipients was Guelph's
Mark Bujnowski (field events MVP), Alberta's
Tegra Jan-King (rookie of the year) and Saskatchewan's
Jake Neufeld (student-athlete community service award).
On the women's side,
Jessy Lacourse from the Laval Rouge et Or was named the outstanding performer in track events, while Manitoba's
Madisson Lawrence was named the outstanding performer in field events. Joining them on the honours list are Laval's
Frédérique Chiasson (rookie of the year) and Guelph's
Tyra Boug (student-athlete community service award).
The three-day U SPORTS championship meet, hosted by the University of Saskatchewan for the fourth time overall, but the first since 2006, runs from Thursday to Sunday at the Saskatoon Fieldhouse. Live streaming of the event is available on CBC's digital platforms (English) and usports.ca (French). The major awards luncheon gala is scheduled for Thursday.
