QUEBEC CITY –
Lee-Sophie Verret scored a game-high 19 rebounds and pulled down eight rebounds as Laval cruised to a 71-42 victory over visiting McGill in women's basketball at the Centre PEPS, Saturday.
The result improved league-leading Laval's record to 4-0 atop the RSEQ conference. McGill, which started the season with a 2-0 mark evened its record at 2-2.
The Rouge et Or led from start to finish, leading 13-11 after the opening quarter before taking control. They outscored the Martlets by a lopsided 21-2 margin in the second and 19-8 in the third, to take a commanding 53-21 lead into the fourth quarter, which McGill won 21-18.
The tale of the tape was most evident at the free-throw line, in rebounding and in the turnover battle.
Laval went to the line 19 times and came away with 13 points, compared to McGill, which only had five trips to the charity stripe and ended up with just one basket. The winning side had a favourable 20-13 advantage in turnovers that translated to a 21-6 margin on the scoreboard. The Rouge et Or also had a huge 46-25 advantage in rebounding.
Lilly Rose Chatila and
Emma-Jane Scotten paced the Martlets with 10 and nine points, respectively.
Katerina Stoupas added five points and a team-leading 10 rebounds, with one assist and a steal.
Laval shot 42.2 per cent from the field (27/64) and went 4-for-13 from three-point range, while McGill shot 28.8 per cent (17/59) and went 7-for-21 from downtown.
McGill will now turn its focus to the upcoming game at Bishop's (1-3) on Nov. 23. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. Laval will host second-place Concordia (3-1) on Nov. 25.
