BURNABY, BC --
Jacob Lofaro and
Federico Sanchez, two rowers from McGill, teamed up to win a silver medal in the men's double sculls at the Canadian University Rowing Association championships at Burnaby Lake, B.C., Sunday. The three-day showcase featured 297 athletes from 20 universities across Canada.
It marked McGill's first medal at the annual CURA title meet since 2014, when
Julian Pouliot won silver in the men's single, held at Elk Lake, B.C.
Lofaro, a 20-year-old civil engineering junior, hails from Grimsby, Ont., while
Sanchez, a Montrealer, is a 28-year-old science junior majoring in kinesiology. Their racing shell crossed the finish line in seven minutes and 5.99 seconds. Brock won the race in 7:04.68, while Queen's was third in 7:11.05. The open double was considered a trial event this year and the points earned from that race were not included in the final team standings.
Two other McGill boats qualified for the men's A finals. The coxless pair with
Markus Maile and
Edison Luke, both sophomores from Vancouver, B.C., placed fifth.
The heavyweight eight finished sixth with a crew composed of
Ayoub Sabri, a sophomore from Morocco, plus freshman
Angus Burke from Lisbon Falls, Maine, Montrealer
Patrice Légaré, sophomore
Josh Bowman of Dartmouth, N.S., in addition to the aforementioned Luke, Maile, Lofaro, and Sanchez. The coxswain was
Varya Kataria, an anatomy and cellular biology sophomore from Ottawa.
McGill finished tied for sixth of 20 schools on the men's side and 11th in the women's division.
On the women's side, no McGill boats qualified for the A finals but three did reach the B finals.
The lightweight pair was third to finish ninth overall. The boat was composed of sophomores
Hannah Boehm, from Chelsea, Que., and Montrealer
Alice Saito.
The heavyweight eight also placed third each to finish ninth overall. The boats featured sophomore
Emily Lindquist of San Clemente, Calif., sophomore
Abigail Powell of The Bahamas, freshman
Naomi Fandrich of Fort Langley, B.C., sophomore
Eloise Doesserich from Washington, D.C., sophomore
Amalia Tinmouth of Ottawa, sophomore
Sophia Waller from England, sophomore
Marienne Scarth-Lella of Toronto and and
Mariam Anwar, a native of Cairo, Egypt, in her second year of a doctorate program in biology. The coxswain was the aforementioned Kataria.
The women's coxless pair came in sixth to finish 12th overall.
The UBC men's team and the Victoria women's team both defended their national titles. The T-Birds men's crew claimed back-to-back titles after compiling 123 points to finish ahead of Brock (100) and Victoria (90). It came down to the final race in the women's competition, with Victoria edging UBC to also repeat as champs, collecting the gold with 108 points, narrowly ahead of UBC in second (100) and Queen's (91) in third.
