Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Earl Zukerman

Frosty fourth quarter fatal as basketball Martlets undefeated streak snapped

MONTREAL – Areej Burgonio tallied a game-high 21 points as Concordia snapped McGill's two-game win streak with a 55-37 decision in women's university basketball before a sold-out crowd at the John Dore Court, Saturday.

It was the first of four scheduled confrontations between the archrivals and the third straight win for the Stingers, who had gone 4-5 in the previous nine meetings with McGill. The teams will not meet again this semester and will resume their rivalry on Jan. 11 and 13, with a home-and-home-series.

The Martlets, which cruised into the game with an unblemished 2-0 record, was in position to win a road game after entering the fourth quarter deadlocked at 36-36. But they inexplicably fell part in the final stanza, which the Concordia took by a lopsided 19-1 margin. It was McGill's lowest scoring quarter since the switchover from halves to quarters was implemented in 2006-07.

McGill shooters were colder than the frosty temperatures outdoors, going 0-for-19 from the field in the fourth quarter. The Martlets finished with a 17.4 per cent success rate from the field (12/69). They went 4-for-30 from trey territory and 9-for-15 from the free-throw line.

Concordia shot 36.4 per cent (20/55), 6-for-21 and 9-for-14, respectively.

Joining Burgonio in double digits was Angela Batrla (11) and Serena Tchida (10).

McGill's leading point-getters were Lily Rose Chatila (9), Emma-Jane Scotten (8) and Stephy Tchoukuiegno (7).

The Martlets had a 17-10 advantage in turnovers, while Concordia held a slight 38-36 edge in rebounds.

The Stingers (2-1) return to the court on Nov. 16 when they play host to UQAM (0-2).

McGill (2-1) has two more road games before returning home. The Martlets will confront undefeated Laval (2-0) on Nov. 18, then head to Bishop's (0-2) on Nov. 23 before returning home to host UQAM on Nov. 25 in a 2 p.m. matinee at Love Competition Hall.

MARTLETS MURMURS: The McGill roster features eight new faces, to go along with a pair of sophomores, four juniors and two seniors… The breakdown by place of birth includes nine players from Quebec, three from Ontario, and one apiece from Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Nova Scotia,  and one from Syria who played CEGEP ball in Montreal.
