MONTREAL – Two defenders from the McGill men's soccer team have earned all-star status in a vote conducted by the league's seven head coaches and announced by the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec.
Freshman
Matisse Chrétien of Quebec City earned a spot on the first team, while
Nassim Kemel, a first-year transfer who hails from the Algerian city of Mekla, made the second squad.
The Redbirds also had three honourees who merited all-rookie honours, including
Chrétien, plus
Mathis Cyr of Rivière-du-Loup, Que., and
Nathan Yee of Richmond, B.C.
Chrétien, a 6-foot-3, 177-pound defender, dressed in 11 of the team's 12 regular season games. The 20-year-old physical and health education freshman scored one goal. He enrolled at McGill this year after graduating from Collège Ahuntsic and played for CS St. Hubert last summer in the Première ligue de
soccer du Québec.
Kemel, a fleet-footed, 5-foot-7, 135-pound midfielder, led the Redbirds in scoring with four goals in a dozen games. A 22-year-old transfer from the Montreal Carabins, he is working on a certificate in computers and information technology. He is a product of Collège Montmorency.
Cyr, a rookie striker who measures 6-foot-2 and 170-pounds, was second on the team in scoring with three goals in 12 games. The 20-year-old political science freshman was recruited out of Champlain College in St. Lambert, Que. He also played for CS St. Hubert last summer in the PLSQ.
Yee, a 5-foot-8, 125-pound rookie midfielder, dressed for all 12 games and finished third on the team in scoring with a pair of goals. The 18-year-old management freshman enrolled at McGill this year out of Steveston-London secondary school in B.C. He played last summer for Fusion FC of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League.
