OTTAWA, ONT –
Dylan James of Little Britain, Ont., collected five points, and two other players added hat-tricks, as the visiting McGill men's lacrosse team overwhelmed Ottawa 11-4 in the annual Isaac Lavallee memorial game, Saturday, to stretch their win streak to five consecutive contests.
The annual event is a tribute to a former Gee-Gees lacrosse player who passed away in 2019 with a rare form of bone cancer.
McGill, which never trailed, led 3-1 after the opening quarter, 7-1 at halftime and 13-1 after three. Most of the starting lineup was substituted liberally in the final stanza, which Ottawa won 3-1. The 11 goals marked the fourth straight game with double-digit scoring for the Redbirds.
James found the back of the net once and added four helpers, upping his team leading totals to 16 goals and 37 points in nine games.
Teammates
Rowan Birrell added three goals and one assist, while
Isaiah Cree notched a hat-trick of his own.
John Miraglia of Memphis, Tenn., found the back of the net twice, extending his goal-scoring streak to nine consecutive games. He now has a 16-4-20 record on the season.
Rounding out the goals for McGill was
Preston Norris and
Massimo Thauvette.
Replying for the Gee-Gees was
Steven Ainsworth with two,
Dylan Leclair and
Michael Geogan.
McGill deployed three goalies, including starter
Joseph Boehm, who was credited with the win. He played 33:38 and allowed just one goal on nine shots.
Henry Komosa replaced him and saved all five shots faced before giving way to understudy
Calum Leaver-Preyra played the final 8:21 and conceded three goals on five shots.
Finn Harapiak started for Ottawa and was beaten for nine goals before giving way to
Mathias Houlahan, who allowed two goals over the last 19:17.
The Redbirds took seven of 11 penalties called in the contest. McGill, which sits third in the CUFLA East with a 7-2 record, closes out the regular season on Sunday (Oct. 22) in Peterborough, Ont., against the Trent Excalibur (7-2). The start time was originally set for 1 p.m. but Trent has since changed the opening faceoff several times and It has now been confirmed for a 5 p.m. start.
McGill will then host the fourth-place team, either Queen's or Bishop's, in a CUFLA sudden-death quarter-final on Oct. 29 at 1:30 p.m.
