Sluggish Redbirds rally from three-goal deficit with seven unanswered goals against Gaiters

MONTREAL – Rowan Birrell of North Vancouver, B.C., scored twice and set-up two others as McGill rallied from a three-goal deficit in the second half with seven unanswered goals en route to an 11-7 victory over Bishop's in men's lacrosse at Percival Molson Stadium, Wednesday.

This was an unscheduled make-up date for the Oct. 4 game that ended up being a late postponement by the Gaiters due to unforeseen transportation issues.

In a contest full of momentum swings, the lead changed hands four times. McGill jumped into an early 2-0 lead but BU battled back to knot the score at 2-2 after the opening quarter. The Redbirds jumped ahead 4-2 in the second stanza but Bishop's rebounded to take a 6-4 advantage into halftime. Things looked bleak for a sluggish McGill squad when the Gaiters added a fifth consecutive marker early in the third quarter to go ahead 7-4. But seven different Redbirds found their targets over the last 19 minutes.

Birrell, a 19-year-old biology sophomore, put McGill ahead 3-2 early in the second quarter, then closed out the scoring with 87 seconds remaining in the contest. With two assists, the 6-foot-2, 170-pound midfielder is now second on the team in both goals (14) and points (20) over his eight games played.

Massimo Thauvette, a sophomore from Montreal, also added a pair to the McGill attack. Singles went to Dylan James of Little Britain, Ont., Luke Dawick of Oakville, Ont., Owen Howard of Cincinnati, Ohio, Joshua Jewell of La Canada, Calif., Isaiah Cree of Akwesasne, N.Y., Mark Symon of New Canaan, Conn., and John Miraglia.

For Miraglia, a political science sophomore from Memphis, Tenn., it extended his goal-scoring streak to eight consecutive contests.

Goaltender Joseph Boehm, a fifth-year computer science senior from Waterloo, Ont., registered a dozen saves on 19 shots for the win. Elie Sebastien conceded 11 goals on 27 shots for the loss.

Pacing the Gaiters offensively was Markus Young, with two. Other BU scorers were Tucker Kauffeldt, Liam Reynolds, Jackson Cowley, Ian Nicholson and Joel Sweet.

The third-place Redbirds improved to 6-2 and will close out the regular season schedule with road games at Ottawa (0-8) on Oct. 21 and at Trent (7-1) on Oct. 22. McGill has clinched a playoff berth in the CUFLA quarter-final round and will either host Queen's (3-6) or Bishop's (2-6) in a sudden-death affair on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 1:30 p.m.
