KINGSTON, ONT –
Dylan James scored four goals and
Rowan Birrell added a hat-trick as McGill cruised to a 12-7 road victory at Queen's in men's lacrosse, Thursday.
The result, combined with a 9-5 win over the Gaels in the Legacy Game on Sept. 30, gave McGill a clean season series sweep over Queen's and improved the head-to-head win streak to three.
McGill scored the first seven goals of the contest to put the game out of reach early on. The Redbirds led 6-0 after the first quarter, 8-2 at halftime and 9-4 after three. Each team connected three times in the final stanza.
James, a 5-foot-10, 183-pound midfielder from Little Britain, Ont., reached the four-goal plateau for the second time this season and currently ranks fifth among CUFLA East scorers with a 13-9-22 record in six games. He opened the scoring, then made it 5-0 in the first quarter. The 22-year-old psychology senior completed his hat-trick early in the third to put the Redbirds ahead 9-3 and added a fourth marker to give his troops a 12-5 cushion with 5:27 remaining in the contest.
The other marksmen for McGill included
John Miraglia and
Isaiah Cree with two apiece. Miraglia, a 6-foot-1 midfielder from Memphis, Tenn., extended his goal-scoring streak to six consecutive games. The political science senior now has nine goals this season. Cree, an international development studies senior, improved his season scoring record to 7-5-12 in six games.
Reed Allen and
Jacob McLean paced the Gaels with two goals apiece. Singles went to
Owen Guest,
Dano Realini and
Zachary Glazebrook.
Goaltender
Joseph Boehm, a fifth-year computer science senior from Waterloo, Ont., saved 12 of 18 shots for the win. He gave way to understudy
Calum Leaver-Preyra, a freshman from Etobicoke, Ont, who played the final 4:33 and allowed one goal on two shots.
The Gaels took seven of eight penalties called, including a game misconduct to head coach
Connor Kearnan late in the contest.
McGill, which improved to 4-2, moved four points ahead of the fourth-place Gaels (2-5) in the six-team CUFLA East Division. The Redbirds are two points behind second-place Trent (5-1), with four games remaining before playoffs.
McGill will host winless Ottawa (0-6) on Oct. 15 at 1 p.m., in the team's annual Homecoming Game at Percival Molson Stadium.
REDBIRDS RAP: A make-up date has not yet been determined for the postponed game from Oct. 4, when Bishop's was unable to make the trip to Montreal. McGill is in the midst of playing four games in 11 days before playoffs and the window to accommodate Bishop's is small. Should the teams not agree on a makeup date, BU would have to forfeit, as per CUFLA regulations.
