MONTREAL –
Elisabeth Pronovost of Chambly, Que., scored the game-winning goal as McGill pulled off a stunning 1-0 upset over the defending national champion Montreal Carabins, ranked No. 4 in the U SPORTS women's soccer rankings, at Percival Molson Stadium, Sunday.
It was the Martlets first victory over UdeM since a 1-0 road victory at Stade CEPSUM on Oct. 6, 2019, and snapped the team's five game losing streak to Montreal. McGill's last home-field victory over the Carabins was a 2-1 decision on Sept. 20, 2012, ending an 0-7-2 winless streak at Molson Stadium.
Pronovost, a 5-foot-5 midfielder leaped into a spectacular crossing pass from
Ariel Carignan, a defender from Sherbrooke, Que., and headed the ball into the top right corner in the 37th minute of play. It was the first goal of the season and fourth career marker in regular season play for the 20-year-old science student, majoring psychology. She beat UdeM goalkeeper
Kelly Cantin, who registered two saves and took only her second loss of the season.
Sophie Guilmette of Ahuntsic, Que., earned a four-save shutout, improving to 4-2-3 on the season. It was her fifth clean sheet of the campaign and 10th career whitewash over her two years with the Martlets.
McGill plays next on Oct. 6 in a 7 p.m. start at Bishop's (2-5-2), which sits seventh in the eight-team RSEQ conference. Montreal will host Sherbrooke (2-5-3) on the same date.
