MONTREAL –
Maggie Denys scored a game-high 17 points, including the game-winning trey with 94 seconds remaining, as the visiting Windsor Lancers rallied for a 78-73 victory over McGill in women's basketball non-conference play, Tuesday, at Love Competition Hall.
The 73 points marked McGill's highest offensive output in 36 games over nearly three years, dating back to a 75-53 victory over Concordia on Jan. 25, 2020.
Windsor led 22-21 after the opening quarter but the teams were even at 40-40 heading into the intermission. The Lancers took a 59-53 advantage into the final frame, which McGill won 20-19 but came up short.
In a game that featured 15 lead changes, the Martlets appeared poised to win when
Katie Rathwell hit a pair of free-throws to put her troops ahead 70-65 with 4:49 remaining but the Lancers went on 13-3 run down the stretch. The host team had another shot of adrenaline when
Joy Taan-Tobias nailed a triple to knot the score at 73-73 with 2:26 left but they ran out of steam.
Other high scorers for Windsor were
Vanessa Budimunda (13) and
Julia Chiarot (12).
Four Martlets reached double-digits in scoring, led by Rathwell and Taan-Tobias with 13 points apiece.
Emma-Jane Scotten and
Stephy Tchoukuiegno had 12 and 11, respectively. Scotten added a game-high seven rebounds.
The biggest factor was Windsor scoring more points off free-throws than McGill had in trips to the line. The Lancers shot 17-for-24 from the charity stripe, compared to a 7-for-11 performance for the Martlets.
The visitors had a 35-27 edge in rebounding and committed 17 turnovers to McGill's 10.
McGill shot 43.3 per cent from the floor (29/67) – their second-best effort over the season – and went 8-for-23 from beyond the arc. Windsor shot 44.6 per cent, going 3-for-17 from long distance.
The Lancers improved to 7-10 overall, including a 4-5 regular season record. They will resume their OUA schedule on Jan. 7 at Western (7-3).
McGill dropped to 2-13 overall, with an 0-6 mark in RSEQ play. The Martlets have 10 league games left and will resume their conference schedule with a home-and-home series against the
Université du Québec à Montréal (4-2), beginning with a road game at the Centre sportif de l'UQAM on Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. That will be followed by a return affair against the Citadins on Jan. 14 at 2 p.m.
