Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Matthew McCarthey

McGill overcomes loss of goalkeeper and blanks Sherbrooke soccer side

MONTREAL – McGill overcame the first-half loss of red-carded goaltender Ludovyck Ciociola and struck for a pair of second half goals en route to a 2-0 victory over Sherbrooke in RSEQ men's soccer at Percival Molson Stadium, Sunday.

The result was payback for a stinging 6-0 loss at Sherbrooke in the last meeting, on Oct. 29, 2021.

Julian Huster, a senior defender from West Vancouver, B.C., scored what proved to be the game-winner, shorthanded and only two minutes into the second half. He converting a rebound that was initially saved by Thomas Goddaert. The Sherbrooke 'keeper was charged with the loss, conceding two goals on six shots.

Joseph Getz, a sophomore striker who also hails from Vancouver, was substituted back into the game and added a shorthanded insurance marker on a penalty kick in the 86th minute. Getz had been in the starting lineup but was subbed out in the 33rd minute when Ciociola was red-carded and replaced by veteran 'keeper Chris Cinelli-Faia. There are unlimited substitutions in university soccer.

Ciociola, who had started all six games this season, registered one save before being ejected after racing out of his net for a loose ball and colliding near the 40-yard line with Sherbrooke striker Yousseg Raouchi, who appeared to be offside but was on a breakaway.

Cinelli-Faia, the starting McGill 'keeper last year, substituted in and stopped both shots faced over the final 57 minutes to preserve the shutout and register the victory between the pipes.

Despite being shorthanded a player for two-thirds of the contest, the Redbirds led 15-9 in shots attempted, 9-4 in shots on target and had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Sherbrooke was assessed 16 of the 29 fouls called and took two of the three yellow cards issued by the officials.

The result evened McGill's record at 2-2-2 in the Quebec conference, while winless Sherbrooke dropped to 0-6-0 and remained in seventh place. The Redbirds sit sixth in the seven-team RSEQ conference but are only one point out of the fourth and final playoff berth.

McGill will face division-leading UQAM (3-1-2) at Saputo Stadium on Friday (Sept. 30) at 8:15 p.m.  At the same time, Sherbrooke, will be looking for its first victory of the season when the Vert & Or confront fourth-place Laval (2-1-3) in Quebec City.
