MONTREAL -- A pair of first half goals by
Andrew Foote proved to be sufficent as Concordia held on for a key 2-1 victory over visiting McGill in men's university soccer action, Friday..
The result improved Concordia's record to 2-1-2 and gave the Stingers sole possession of fifth place in the seven-team RSEQ conference. They now have a three-point bulge over McGill (1-2-2).
It also extended Concordia's modest undefeated streak over the Redbirds to 2-0-1 since the last McGill win, a 4-0 home-field whitewash on Oct. 3, 2019.
It was a testy affair that featured 28 fouls (15 to McGill) and five yellow cards, four of them to the Stingers.
"We lost the game in the first 45 minutes," said McGill head coach
Marc Mounicot. "We pushed hard in the second half but it was not enough and we ran out of time."
Foote connected in the 34th and 42nd minutes to give the Stingers a commanding lead but McGill cut the deficit in half when
Jake Gerenraich converted a pass from
Reese Carlow in the final minute before intermission.
Concordia had a 22-12 edge in attempted shots that translated into a slim 8-7 margin on target.
Stingers' goalkeeper
Jordy Kerlegrand made six saves for the win, while McGill's
Ludovyck Ciociola was credited with six saves in a losing cause.
Concordia will now make the short trip around Mt. Royal on Sunday with the third-place Montreal Carabins (2-1-2). At the same time, McGill will host last-place Sherbrooke (0-5-0) in a 1 p.m. start at Percival Molson Stadium
