Goalkeeper Ciociola makes 10 saves, Getz tallies key goal as Redbirds battle No. 6 Laval to soccer stalemate

QUEBEC CITY -- Goalkeeper Ludovyck Ciociola registered 10 saves and sophomore striker Joseph Getz scored a key first-half goal as visiting McGill battled No.6 ranked Laval to a 1-1 draw in men's soccer, Sunday, not far from the Plains of Abraham.

The result improved McGill's record to 1-1-2, while Laval remains undefeated at 1-0-3. It snapped a four-game losing streak to the Rouge et Or and the point earned in the standings was McGill's first on Laval territory since a win by forfeit on Sept. 25, 2016. Excluding that, it had been more than a decade, dating back to a 3-2 McGill victory on Sept. 18, 2011.

The game was delayed 15 minutes due to the late arrival of McGill's team bus, which had technical issues. Laval had a 20-4 advantage in attempted shots, including an 11-3 margin on net. But the Redbirds scored early and had a huge helping hand from Ciociola, the 5-foot-11 management freshman from Montreal, who stood tall to preserve the tie.

Getz, a native of Vancouver, B.C., who tallied twice last year as a freshman, opened the scoring with his first of the season in the 33rd minute of play. The swift-footed 5-foot-11, 175-pound forward converting a crossing pass from junior defender Olivier Onye of Toronto.

That play held up until the 59-minute mark when Gonzalo Misol netted the equalizer. That goal rejuvenated Laval and they pressured McGill for much of the final 30 minutes to no avail.

Vincent Desrosiers played in nets for the Rouge et Or and turned aside two of the three shots he faced.

The game featured 21 fouls, split evenly and four yellow cards, three of them assessed to Laval. Emilio Rossi-Levin was flagged for McGill, while Laval's Jeremy Menard, Jean-Philippe Levesque and Baptiste Toussaint were cautioned by the referee.

Next on the schedule for McGill is a confrontation at Concordia (1-1-2) on Sept. 23, while Laval plays host to division-leading UQTR (3-1-1) the same night. Both games are slated for an 8:15 p.m. start.
