MONTREAL -- Freshman forward
Pedro Gulli scored the game-winner and goalkeeper
Ludovyck Ciociola posted a shutout as McGill handed the division-leading UQTR Patriotes their first loss, a 1-0 decision in men's soccer at Percival Molson Stadium, Friday.
It was the first win of the season for McGill, which evened their record at 1-1-1. At the other end of the spectrum, No.8 ranked UQTR, which won the national championship in 2019, tumbled to 2-1-1. McGill has now taken points of the Pats in back-to-back meetings, including a 4-4 draw in their final meeting last season.
It was the first career marker for
Gulli, a 19-year-old civil engineering freshman from Montreal, who converted a pass from sophomore
Reese Carlow in the 69th minute.
The Patriotes had a 15-6 territorial advantage in shots attempted, but only a 5-3 margin on target. But they could not solve the puzzle presented by Ciociola, a 5-foot-11 management freshman from Montreal, who made five saves for his first career victory between the pipes.
UQTR netminder
Mathieu Lacharit took the loss, allowing one goal on three shots.
The Patriotes had a wide 7-2 margin in corner kicks and took nine of the 20 fouls called in the contest.
Two yellow cards were issued by the officials, both to McGill, with one assessed to
Emilio Rossi-Levin and the other to
Gaetan Hamid.
The Redbirds (1-1-1) have one day to prepare for Sunday's road confrontation with undefeated Laval (1-0-2) in Quebec City on Sunday at 1 p.m., while UQTR will host Concordia (1-0-2).
