MONTREAL –
Mégane Sauvé scored the game-winner and added a pair of assists as the No. 5 ranked Montreal Carabins blanked McGill 3-0 in women's university soccer action at Terrain Vincent d'Indy, Sunday.
The sophomore midfielder from St. Hyacinthe, Que., connected in the 17th minute. The goal was essentially a double-whammy as McGill had missed a glorious scoring opportunity by fifth-year striker
Giovanna Tiberio in the fifth minute of the game.
Sauvé then set up insurance markers by
Léonie Portel (32') and
Mia Tessier (76').
U de M had an identical 7-2 edge in both corner kicks and shots on net.
"It was a disappointing result but I was (relatively) pleased with the effort," said McGill head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes, whose squad has now dropped three consecutive meetings with Montreal since a 1-0 victory on Oct. 6, 2019. "We actually played the Carabins much better today than in the past few years. We combined well, found spaces, got behind them and that was a positive compared to the last few seasons... We definitely need to be better on individual defending but as a collective group, things are looking more promising for the season."
Goalkeeper
Catherine Langelier made two saves to earn the shutout for U de M, while McGill's
Sophie Guilmette took the loss, conceding three goals on seven shots.
The Martlets were assessed seven of the 11 fouls called and two of the three yellow cards issued by the referee.
Audrey Moyen (11') and
Kathryn Chadwick (49') were carded for McGill, while
Maxyme Nobert (55') was cautioned for the Carabins.
The officials, however, appeared to overlook a pair of flagrant Carabins elbows to the face of starting midfielders
Mara Bouchard, and
Hana Yazdani. Bouchard did not return after being shaken up in the 66th minute.
Valdes noted that his troops were able to utilize some much-improved depth as three young players from the west coast who saw their first significant minutes of playing time. That group included freshman defender
Sasha Merck of Surrey, B.C., junior midfielder
Meghan Lauener of New Westminster, B.C., and the aforementioned
Hana Yazdani, a rookie from Coquitlam, B.C., who merited her first starting assignment.
"They worked hard in practice, deserved some playing time and did well against a very strong opponent," said Valdes.
Both teams return to the pitch on Sept. 16 at 6 p.m., when Montreal (2-1) plays at Bishop's (0-2-1) and UQTR (1-2) visits McGill (1-2) at Molson Stadium.
