MONTREAL, QC – Goaltender
Sophie Guilmette registered a 10-save shutout and striker
Thalia Krauth-Ibarz scored the game-winner as McGill blanked visiting UQTR 2-0 in women's soccer, Friday, at Molson Stadium.
The result extended McGill's five-year undefeated streak against the Patriotes to 5-0-3, dating back to the last loss, a 2-1 decision in Trois-Rivieres, on Sept. 1, 2017.
It was a wide-open affair with UQTR holding a 15-14 advantage in attempted shots, including a 10-9 edge on target. But Guilmette, a 5-foot-6 kinesiology major from Montreal, stood tall in the McGill net to earn her first victory with a Martlets jersey after playing in the NCAA for Vanderbilt.
The Martlets, who improved to 2-1 in the RSEQ conference, opened the scoring in the 15th minute when
Krauth-Ibarz , a senior striker from Brossard, Que., converted a pass from
Zoe Gardiner, a sophomore from Ottawa.
Freshman winger
Aaliyah Kamder of Markham, Ont., added an insurance marker in the 50th minute.
There were 21 fouls called in the contest, 11 to the Patriotes. Both sides were assessed one yellow card, with
Stephanie Hill being flagged for McGill and
Charlotte Pellerin receiving a caution for the Pats.
The Martlets (2-2-0) will now prepare to do battle with undefeated Laval (4-0-0), a longtime bitter foe, near the Plains of Abraham, on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in Quebec City. At the same time, UQTR (1-3-0) will host Concordia (0-1-3).
