MONTREAL –
Caroline Task of Dorval, Que., scored a game-high 26 points as top-seeded Concordia overcame a first-quarter scare en route to a 70-52 victory over McGill in RSEQ women's basketball at Love Competition Hall, Thursday.
Task was virtually unstoppable and was ruthless from beyond the arc, connecting on seven of 13 triples, many of the back-breaking variety. Teammate
Coralie Dumont added 19 points and seven rebounds, while
Myriam Leclerc contributed 14 points and eight rebounds.
Perhaps inspired by the McGill men's last-second 58-57 victory over Concordia in the Lengvari Cup game earlier to open the doubleheader, the Martlets had their best start of the season. After a back-and-forth first quarter, they found themselves trailing by a narrow 18-16 advantage. But a tough second quarter doomed the effort as Concordia won the period 19-9 to take a 37-25 halftime lead. The Red and White bounced back to win the third 15-14 but it was too little too late and the visitors took the final frame 19-12.
McGill's offensive output matched their third-highest scoring game of the campaign and their second best game on the glass, out-rebounding the visitors 40-35. Seven Martlets found the scoresheet. three of them in double-digit scoring, in one of the program's more balanced offensive performances of the season.
The main story of the night for the Martlets was the play of two-guard
Emma-Jane Scotten, a 19-year-old elementary education freshman from Ottawa, who looked confident and scored a career-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds. The 5-foot-9 sharpshooter went 5-for-11 from the floor, 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.
Iman Ibrahim, a speedy, 5-foot-2 point-guard from Montreal, tallied 10 points for McGill, dished out a career-best eight assists and added a pair of rebounds with one steal. Her balanced attack earned a team-high seven trips to the charity stripe where she drained four of her shots.
Another rookie,
Charlotte Guerin from France, was also a major offensive contributor. She had 11 points on an efficient 5-for-7 performance from the floor. The engineering freshman added seven rebounds, a game-high three blocks and a pair of assists.
Amelie Rochon, a third-year medical student from Levis, Que., continued to build on what has been a steady second semester, largely controlling play down low. She collected a career-high 10 rebounds in addition to four points and a steal before fouling out.
Rounding out the scoring for McGill was
Maddy Colpitts (6),
Katie Rathwell (4) and
Kristy Awikeh (2).
With the win Concordia improved to 8-3 on the year and one regular-season game remaining before playoffs, a rematch against McGill at the John Dore Court, on Saturday (Mar. 19) at 2 p.m. The Martlets, who dropped to 0-11, will be trying to avoid a winless season for the first time since going 0-12 in 1974-75.
