MONTREAL –
Coralie Dumont led all scorers with 23 points as the top-seeded Concordia Stingers swarmed past McGill 100-44 in a women's basketball season finale, Saturday, at the John Dore Court.
The result clinched first-place for Concordia, which finished at 9-3, two points ahead of Bishop's (8-4) in the RSEQ conference. The Stingers will host fourth-place UQAM (6-6) in a sudden-death semifinal on March 23, while third-place Laval (7-5) will travel to Bishop's for the other semifinal on the same date.
It was the final game in a rebuilding season for the fifth-place Martlets who went 0-12, their first winless season since 1973-74.
A sharp-shooting Concordia squad came out flying. They took a 26-9 lead after 10 minutes, built that into a 56-19 margin at halftime and took a resounding 73-30 advantage into the final quarter.
Seven Stingers scored at least eight points in what was a well-balanced attack.
Myriam Leclerc played an impressive inside-outside game for Concordia, adding 18 points and pulling down a game-high nine rebounds. She and Dumont proved to be too much for the Martlets to handle down low and the pair also combined for 16 boards to control the paint handily. Leclerc was also dangerous from behind the arc, converting 4-of-7 trey attempts.
For McGill, the offensive struggles that have plagued them for much of the season were on display again. The team shot just 33 per cent from the field and 20 per cent from three-point range.
A bright spot was the play of rookie
Iman Ibrahim, a Montreal native, who scored 15 points in 29 minutes of court time. The 5-foot-5 point-guard shot 5-for-16 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the line.
Kristy Awikeh, a six-foot centre from Syria, had her strongest outing of the year. The kinesiology sophomore scored a career-high 10 points – on efficient 6-for-10 shooting – while also pulling down a career-best eight rebounds.
Rounding out the scoring for McGill was
Emma-Jane Scotten (5 pts) of Ottawa,
Maddy Colpitts (4) of Fredericton,
Charlotte Guerin (4) from France and
Katie Rathwell (3) of North Battleford, Sask.
With a roster that featured one senior, three juniors, one sophomore and eight freshmen, the Martlets had their share of growing pains and was at a competitive disadvantage every time they hit the court. With a season under their belt and a good recruiting class, the future shows much promise.
