MONTREAL – Argentinian import
Victoria Gauna registered a double-double with a game-high 15 points and 10 assists as the visiting Bishop's Gaiters handed McGill a 78-59 defeat in RSEQ women's basketball, Saturday, at Love Competition Hall.
BU improved to 7-3 and moved into a first-place tie with Concordia (7-3) with two games remaining before playoffs. Despite dropping to 0-10, the Martlets looked much improved en route to their highest offensive output of the regular season, surpassing by six points the 53 scored in a game at UQAM on Feb. 19.
The Gaiters led 14-12 after the opening quarter but McGill rallied to take a 29-28 edge heading into the intermission, their first halftime lead of the season. However, BU bounced back to win the third stanza 26-12 and the final quarter 24-18.
Gauna was one of five Gaiters to score in double figures, along with fellow starters
Jessica Martel and
Jael Kabunda, who had 13 points apiece, while
Deborah Aboagye came off the bench to tally 14.
Four of McGill's five starters also reached double digits in scoring, another season-high.
Iman Ibrahim and
Emma-Jane Scotten paced the Martlets with 12 points apiece, while
Amelie Rochon and
Maddy Colpitts each added 11.
Rounding out the team's offence was
Katie Rathwell with six, followed by
Sydney Foran (4),
Jessica Salanon (2) and
Charlotte Guerin (1).
They say that music soothes the savage beast. But, there's nothing like a cross-town rivalry to help heal a challenging season for McGill. And the last-place Martlets will get the chance to do some damage to the division-leading Stingers (7-3). When they meet for a St. Patrick's Day affair on March 17 at 8 p.m. in Love Competition Hall. Tickets are available available
online only. The men's game starts at 6 p.m. with the Redbirds looking to stretch win streak to 11.
The women's return match is slated for Saturday at the Loyola campus in a 2 p.m. matinee, which precedes the men's game.
Bishop's will close out their schedule with a home-and-home against fourth-place UQAM (5-5), beginnning in Montreal on Mar. 17, followed by the return confrontation in Lennoxville on March 19. If the Citadins sweep, they could finish in a three-way tie for second place with Bishop's (7-3) and Laval (7-5). And if McGill sweeps Concordia, it would be a four-way tie for first place. That's when the real fun begins!
