LENNOXVILLE, Que – Freshman
Victoria Gauna scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down seven rebounds as the Bishop's Gaiters defeated McGill 82-31 in the annual "Shoot for the Cure" women's basketball game at the Mitchell Gym, Thursday.
The Martlets, who dropped to 0-8, were coming of an 11-day bye in the schedule and struggled offensively, matching a season-low point total. They also committed a season-high 31 turnovers that led directly to 31 points. McGill was unable to get untracked after being outscored 17-2 in the opening quarter. Bishop's led 37-12 at halftime and 67-23 after three, then outscored the visitors 15-8 in the final stanza.
One positive for McGill was a 44-40 edge under the boards, with the rare situation of all nine players who dressed getting credit for at least one rebound.
Gauna, a 6-foot-1 forward from Argentina, was one of four Gaiters to reach double-digits, along with fellow freshman
Kalina Alexander-Renaud of Gatineau, Que., and
Amaiquen Siciliano, also from Argentina, who tallied 13 points apiece. Teammate
Deborah Aboagye, a junior from Montreal, contributed a dozen points.
Iman Ibrahim, a 5-foot-2 freshman guard from Montreal, paced McGill with 13 points to go along with seven rebounds, one steal and an assist. She shot 4-for-14 from the field, including 1-for-3 from three-point range. She also went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and played a game-high 35 minutes of court time.
Teammate
Amelie Rochon, a 6-foot-3 centre from Levis, Que., tallied six points and a team-high nine rebounds. The third-year medical student also collected a pair of assists and a blocked shot.

Rookie
Charlotte Guerin, a six-foot forward from France, was held off the scoresheet but pulled down eight rebounds, to go along with four assists and a blocked shot.
Bishop's shot 45.1 per cent from the floor (32/71), went 9-for-30 from three-point range and 9-for-14 from the line. McGill shot just 22.6 per cent (12/53), making one of 14 treys, and went 6-for-10 from the line.
A much taller Gaiters lineup had a 6-3 advantage in blocked shots and a 16-3 edge in steals.
The same two teams will close out their home-and-home on Saturday, in an early 1 p.m. start at Love Competition Hall. The basketball doubleheader was moved up in order to accommodate the volleyball Martlets, who will be playing Game 2 of the RSEQ best-of-three championship series at 7 p.m.
