Laval ladies loom large in hoops win over Martlets

MONTREAL – Lea-Sophie Verret scored a game-high 15 points leading Laval to a 73-47 victory over McGill in women's basketball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.

The Rouge et Or led 20-13 after the first quarter, 31-24 at the intermission and 55-34 after three.

Verret was one of three Laval players to reach double figures in scoring, along with Elodie Lajoie (14) and Frederique Beaudry-Blais (13). Teammate Sabrine Khelifi contributed eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Emma-Jane Scotten, an education junior from Ottawa, paced the Martlets with 13 points, six rebounds, one steal and a pair of assists, before fouling out in the final stanza. The 5-foot-9 guard played a team-high 31 minutes, shot 3-for-5 from the floor and went 6-for-8 from the free-throw line.

Scotten was one of nine Martlets who made the scoresheet. Rounding out the scoring for McGill was Daniella Mbengo (7), Jessica Salanon (7), Kristy Awikeh (4), Stephy Tchoukuiegno (4), Charlotte Guerin (4), Amelie Rochon (3), Andrea Batrla (3) and Ava Renon (2).

Laval had a 36-30 margin in rebounds and an 18-13 advantage in turnovers – which led to a 21-11 difference on the scoreboard – and a 7-2 edge in steals. The Rouge et Or shot 43.9 per cent from the field (29/66), went 10-for-26 from three-point range and drained 5-of-7 free-throws.

McGill shot 32.1 per cent from the floor (18/56), went 4-for-20 from the arc and went 7-for-10 from the charity stripe.

Third-place Laval (3-2) returns to the court on Dec. 1, when they travel to second-place UQAM (4-1) for a 6 p.m. tip-off. McGill (0-5) will close out a difficult fall semester by hosting division-leading Bishop's (5-0) on Dec. 3 in a game that will mark the inaugural return of Diana Ros, new head coach of the Gaiters, who was a former all-star, captain and assistant coach at McGill.

MARTLETS MURMURS: McGill has added a home non-conference game to its schedule. The Martlets will host  Windsor on Jan. 3 in a 4 p.m. tip-off at Love Competition Hall. The last time that McGill played the Lancers was a 67-54 setback at home on Oct. 17, 2021. It was McGill's first return to the court after a 20-month hiatus due to the COVID pandemic.
