MONTREAL – Back-up goaltender
Jordan Naylor registered a 31-save shutout and five different players scored as Concordia surprised visiting McGill 5-0 to capture the 35th edition of the Ronald Corey Cup rivalry game in OUA men's university hockey in a rare Sunday night game at the Ed Meagher Arena.
The result snapped McGill's three-game win streak and marked Concordia's first whitewash over the Redbirds since a 1-0 overtime victory on Oct. 23, 2021. McGill, which has dropped two of three league meetings with Concordia, now maintains a slim 112-111-14 lead in the all-time head-to-head series against the Stingers since the bitter rivals first crossed paths in 1975.
ConU led 2-0 after the first period, then added one in the second and two more in the final stanza. The marksmen, in order, were
Edouard Charron,
Isiah Campbell,
Gabriel Proulx,
Nathan Lavoie and
Nicholas Girouard.
Redbirds goalie
Alexis Shank registered 26 saves between the pipes and took the loss as his record fell to 3-4.
McGill was 0-for-3 on the power-play, while Concordia was 0-for-1.
McGill (7-3-2) returns to action on Nov. 25 when they travel to Ottawa to confront Carleton (6-2-2) in a 7 p.m. puck-drop. Concordia (8-4-0) is now tied with the Redbirds for third place in the nine-team OUA East division. The Stingers will play at Queen's (4-7-1) on Nov. 26.
McGill, which had won the last two Corey Cup contests, now has a 19-11-3 edge in the annual rivalry contest. The Stingers are 12-20-3 in Cup play, including a 1-1 record against UQTR. The event is named after the former president of the Montreal Canadiens who donated the trophy in 1988, for an annual challenge game that represents local college hockey supremacy.
