Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Ravens beat Redbirds to the worm, snatch victory from jaws of defeat in OT shootout

OTTAWA – Rookie Nick McCarry of Calgary, scored once, added three assists and notched the deciding marker in a post-overtime shootout as the Carleton Ravens rallied from a three-goal deficit to defeat McGill 5-4 in OUA men's hockey, Friday,  at the Ice House arena in the nation's capital.

The result moved Carleton (7-2-3) into a tie for third-place with McGill (7-3-3) in the nine-team OUA East division.

The Redbirds had a 37-28 edge in shots but ran into familiar territory in Ottawa. Carleton, which leads the 19-team OUA with 229 PIMs in 12 games, was assessed only 12 of the 38 penalty minutes called in the game. The Ravens went 3-for-7 with the man-advantage, while McGill was 1-for-5.

McGill appeared to be in cruise-control for a much-needed road victory after Eric Uba of Kitchener, Ont., defenceman Mitchell Prowse of Kelowna, B.C., and Brandon Frattaroli of Pierrefonds, Que., scored the game's first three goals.

But senior Parker Aucoin, who now leads the nation with 16 goals in 12 games, ignited the Ravens offence with two markers in 16 seconds – one of them on a power-play – at 9:23 and 9:39 of the second period. Nine minutes later, Carleton evened the score at 3-3 when McCarry connected with the man-advantage at 18:34.

In the third period, sophomore defenceman Simon Kerr put the Ravens ahead at 4:11 with their third power-play goal of the game. That held up until the dying moments, when McGill tried the old pull-the-goalie trick and Uba connected at 19:59 to force overtime. It was Uba's second of the game and team-leading ninth of the season. His goal total is now ranked fourth in the OUA and tied for 11th among the national leaders.

Scott Walford and William Rouleau assisted on the tying tally. Walford, a senior rearguard from Coquitlam, B.C., upped his team-leading points total to 1-13-14 in 13 contests, good enough to share the OUA points lead for defencemen with UQTR's Justin Bergeron (0-14-14).

The seven-minute overtime went scoreless and the Ravens outscored McGill 2-1 in the shootout, which featured eight snipers. Carleton's Kieran Craig put the Ravens ahead on his snapshot but Uba fired a nifty wrist-shot to even the penalty shots at 1-1, setting the stage for the late heroics by McCarry, who scored 23 goals last season in the Western Hockey League.

Ravens senior goaltender Mark Grametbauer registered 33 saves and improve his record to 6-4. McGill veteran Emanuel Vella made 23 saves as his record dropped to 4-2.

Both teams have less than 24 hours to recover before returning to the ice on Saturday (Nov. 26). McGill will host second-place Ontario Tech (8-3-2) in a 4 p.m. start. The Ridgebacks dropped a 3-2 decision at UQTR in a penalty-filled game on Friday.

Carleton plays on the "road" against the Ottawa Gee-Gees (8-6-0) in a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
